I went to a local gunsmith yesterday but did not have the gun. I just went to discuss the situation and meet him. I hope to get it to him today. He told me he would be able to tell me immediately which one is out of spec. He assured me it wasn't my action (while pointing around the room at about a dozen Defiance actions), but that is just speculation, same as the barrel co.

He questioned if they actually finished the machine work before shipping it. I told him that the cartridge wasn't even marked on the barrel, so that could be the case.

As I get facts, I will update you all in this thread.

I could be wrong, but before I gave up my FFL, I believe it was required for a gunsmith to stamp the barrel with the cartridge.

Ive had several defiance actions and they are a great action. But they're guarantee of .001 is bs ive had them as far as .006 different from one to the other

How do you index it on a prefit?

I have a couple of proof prefits for Origin actions, I think they engrave it along the tenon in a circumference more than one time so caliber is always readable.

Yeah I've seen some do that or on the breach but not all, stamping a barrel as to the legality depending on who you ask while I agree it should be.

There is a change in ownership, but changes in quality or manufacturing process are unknown. I have heard nothing negative since the acquisition besides the price increase. In either case, as @reeldawg noted below, they should not offer it.

Regardless of who is at fault, I am not a blame game fan (I do not think the OP does either), but I agree with his stance. Cheers!

The prefit the OP has is from a while ago, he just now got around to installing it. The barrel maker said they just recently started having issues with Defiance headspace. So they may or may not offer prefits for Defiance anymore.

Either way, one of them is at fault and needs to fix it.

What did I win?

On a shouldered prefit "they" think their tolerances are great enough the lettering lines up just above the stock on the left. Savage nut style stamp it banded around the barrel so it doesn't matter the orientation. Two factory Savage barrel builds landed the lettering at 12 O'clock. Covered mostly by the scope, so not an eyesore.
