Defiance Guaranteed Headspace

They said I would need to send action and barrel to them. I am not interested in doing that. I bought this action for the option of installing barrels myself.
I think you should send the action & barrel to the barrel finisher.
Once they work this out and record success (by action #), then they may be able to do more barrels for you in the future -without the action in-hand.

I don't like the idea of [pre-fitting] without actually [fitting].
There is more than just headspace. You also have an important clearance/tolerance between bolt and breech. And it's all w/respect to barrel tightness, so that really should be agreed on up front.

I respect your opinion, but I disagree.

I don't feel like I should have to send anything to them other than the barrel that they advertised as prefit but does not work, especially if I have to cover the cost while waiting for them to determine if they are at fault (they are already saying it isn't their fault without even looking at it). I didn't call them up and ask if they could custom build this for me. I ordered something that they advertise for sale.

I have no desire for them to record my serial number for future barrels, as I feel confident I will not buy another from them.

In regard to the important clearance/tolerance between bolt and breech with respect to barrel tightness, what does it mean if you screw the barrel on, hand-tight, and they are already contacting? How bad out of tolerance would this measure?

In the end, I will probably be the one losing on this deal, but I assure you the lesson will be remembered well.

I've had the same thing happen with a pre-fit that never worked on 4 different actions that it was supposed to fit on. I dont know if I'll ever do the prefit thing again. SJA barrel

I find it interesting that there is very little cost difference at my GS between installing a prefit vs chamber, thread, crown, and engrave. I don't know why I would go the prefit route if I could not install it myself.
Agreed!

Stay your course; good luck!

I have two prefit barrels, from different manufacturers for my Anti. They both headspace properly and shoot lights out. Defiance has built their entire brand on tight, repeatable manufacturing tolerances. I'd personally be questioning the barrel manufacturer, as you are. Not sure what that'll do for your plight but I'm with you on this one.

Is the action a pre or post Beck production? That may be your answer if the barrel manufacturer has just recently started having issues.
There is a change in ownership, but changes in quality or manufacturing process are unknown. I have heard nothing negative since the acquisition besides the price increase. In either case, as @reeldawg noted below, they should not offer it.
f they know the actions aren't in tolerance why do you sell prefits?
Regardless of who is at fault, I am not a blame game fan (I do not think the OP does either), but I agree with his stance. Cheers!

"Prefits" are only as good as the person running the machine, just like any other operator.
If you have the tools to measure the barrel tenon you can figure it out if you can get ahold of Defiance action specs.
Or you can measure your action from the face to the bolt face call Defiance and tell them what you measure see what they say.

That is quite an expensive measuring tool!
