Deciding My Next Rifle’s Chambering

To start this off, I put myself in a little bit of a predicament with my next rifle build. I was planning to do a 7mm PRC, and have been getting my parts together. I'll list my parts below and what I have on hand. My problem is, I was initially told brass would be available in January 2023. I banked on this and the brass never became available. I recently was told brass won't be available as a component until September of this year. I also don't want to pay $60+ a box for Hornady ammo just to use it for the brass.

Having said all of that, I'm going to plan on doing a different chambering. I'm thinking of just running with the oldie but goodie 7mm Rem Mag and throating it long or ordering a custom reamer for 175-180s. I have access to several 7mm reamers of different flavors at Pierce, so I'll probably go that route. I'm trying to avoid ordering a reamer because of the lead time. I like the 7mm SAUM and the 7mm WSM, but brass is my biggest concern with those. At least with the Rem Mag I can get ADG, Peterson, and Norma brass without much struggle. I'd also really like to tinker with the 7-300 PRC, but again I'd have to order a reamer and that's currently a 4-5 month wait. I don't mind waiting, but I was hoping to get this build finished and up and running before the end of summer. I also could get a .30cal barrel and do a big 30, but that's not really what I'd want to do right now.

With all of that, what would you guys do?

Here's my parts/components list I had on hand for the 7PRC I had planned on.

Pierce Shadow LA
Lilja #4 7mm 1-8T 3G spiral fluted
McMillan Game Hunter Carbon
Hawkins BDL bottom metal
MBM 4 port brake
TriggerTech Primary
650x Berger 7mm 175 Elite Hunters
350x Hottenstein 7mm 180gr
5lbs H1000
2lbs H4831sc
1600x Fed 215s

Because you mentioned the 7mm PRC, it reminded me of the 28 Sherman Magnum. That, and the potential for some instant gratification on getting the final needed components. I know the pain.

Looks like he sells reamers and rents them out as well.

Appears there might be an instock reamer here:

Brass (ADG) here:

I've built a 7 WSM and 7 saum recently with prefits and impact actions.

The 7 saum ADG brass is super tough to get. But you're in this deep then the budget may not be the issue. $125-150 per 50 PCs is the average. And it's great stuff.

The 7 WSM Hornady brass is only about $75 per 50 pcs. But I haven't reloaded any yet so we will see whether pockets and necks hold up.

I think the 7 WSM has a slight edge in loading capacity and speed with same projectiles.

I have vowed to never build another belted mag. Not a bad choice in the 7RM I just feel there's so much better out there.

I have a 6.5 creed, 7 saum and 30-28 Nosler so that tells you what i like in cartridge design.

I love my 7 saum but if I were building it today it would be a 7 prc.

If this is a long term hold on this rifle I'd suck it up and use hornady ammo for this year then switch to lapua or adg after season. In reality you could buy 2-3 boxes of hornady ammo and be good on brass for a while. It's not the most desirable but it will work. You may even be able to locate some 1x fired I'd you ask around.
