im trying to figure out what is going to be the best red dot or holographic sight for a plinking handgun but might also be able to stand up to 44 mag for the money? any thoughts would be helpful.

^^^ anything Trijicon is awesome. Take a peek at the Leupold Delta Point, Compact & extremely light weight. They also come with adapters/mounts for most popular configurations: pic rail, 1911, glock etc. All of which are included.

I've used one on a Ruger 22 for years as well as on a S&W 629 Performance Center in 44 Mag. The groups with the 44 at 100 yards are incredible.
