In the computer world, 'down for maintenance' usually means server issues. Maintenance is almost always done with the site up and running, you go into the backend as the administrator and effect changes which takie place immediately.
During the course of my career I have worked on many websites. So I am familiar with 'down for maintenance' and usually when that happens it is all-all-hands-on-deck to get it fixed and back up. So to have it down for days is surprising and has me wondering all kinds of things.
Next step, might have to pm the berger guys to find out what they have to say.
