Berger 208 LRHT on game

Ok well I'm back from my hunt. The results are in. Based on 1 - 202 pound buck and 1 230 pound boar hog it seems to perform as the 215 hybrid. Maybe better on lighter game.

My shot on the buck was free handed at 200 yards and I was going for the shoulder shot. The bullet struck behind the shoulder and struck the bottom of the spine. Destroying the top of lungs. The entrance hole was bullet diameter and the exit hole was a little bigger than a golf ball. When the hide was removed there was a hole that you could stick you hand through.

Very destructive. If I had hit the shoulder there's no doubt in my mind that the shoulders would have been totally destroyed. Notice the hair loss around the exit. That exhibits extreme amount of trama to the area when hair is blown off the skin.

As for the boar it was shot at 80 yards bullet size entrance and a tennis ball size hole exit behind his shoulder. Entrance was directly on the shoulder and angled across and behind the opposite shoulder. The big dropped in its tracks. We did not open the hog up. We dragged him into the bushes and I didn't think to get a pic of the exit. Again I have all the faith in the world that it will perform as the 215 does and I believe it would perform a little better on smaller game other than elk. I wouldn't hesitate one second on shooting an elk.

My next test will be in hogs at long ranges in the pasture this week So I will post some pics of those.

I did not open the tips nor did I adjust the meplats or uniform them. They were used straight out of the box.

@Longtine88 just wanting to confirm, you're pushing 208s @ 3090fps w/ H1000, 90k lands from a 26" 300wm?

I may have misread or misunderstood an earlier post saying the meplats on the 215 and 208 Bergers were identical and if so I am sorry but they are not the same. The 208 is a pointed bullet. I have not shot the 208 at game but we have shot a few deer with the 190 7mm which is also a pointed bullet and the internal damage was incredible. The bullets penetrated 3-4" and then grenaded.

In post #41 I added picture of the 208s. My take, they do appear to be pointed, just sharing my comparison with the 215s. Glad to hear they work great as hunting bullets.

215 left 208 right. That drill bit is .033"

You can see the bit into the 215. It's very very tight. Bit is straight up and down

Now you can see the 208 on right with the drill bit in it and there is a small bit of slack so I guess the open tips are a little different. The 208 is actually larger than the 215's

Lay down a 215 and a 208 on the table, take a macro shot picture of the tips. If your 208s are pointed you can see the obvious difference.

Some trim the meplats with a device like this

Use the Hoover Meplat Trimmer to uniform the ogive length and frontal area of the bullet's meplat to achieve more consistent Ballistic Coefficient.

Pointing is done to increase the BC. Trimming is done to uniform the bc. Long story short the Berger LRHTs are pointed to increase the BC. No other Berger bullets are pointed. They still make the most consistent bullets available in either case but the pointed are geared towards competition shooters. Bergers Meplat reduction is done a little differently(I think) but the results are at least as good.
