I think it depends on what benefits your looking for.
The bench rest and F-Class guys I shoot with like the longer, heavy barrels(up to 30") for weight/high volume shooting. They usually load lower velocities(2850-2900) than the hunters optimizing for top accuracy and barrel life. The hunters can get 2950-3050fps out of a 26" barrel with good accuracy, energy retention, and a more manageable hunting rifle. I am at 2950 fps, and sub .5 MOA out of a 26"barrel. I have a load that gets me to 3040 fps but groups a little bigger. Need to work on it some more.
