can anyone tell me the best way to determine the optimal barrel length for my 270wsm build. I have a .227 Brux at 31" in my cabinet for this build

I hope you mean .277.

The WSMs will work with anything from 22" to 28" After 28" you don't gain much velocity.

I would recommend 26" for all round hunting and maybe a 28" for F Class or extreme long range hunting to get all you can with heavy bullets out of the 270 WSM.

Good Luck on your build.

Purchase Quick Load figure out what you want to load then get the info into Quick Load and knock it around. I just settled on 27 inches for a 300 WM using 215gr Bergers.

As long as possible until it's too long.

Seriously, what he said. Get QL.

Good Morning,

I decided to build a .223 starting with a Rem 700 sps tactical with a 20" barrel. When I went to pick up the gun they had sold the one I ordered but had another on on shelf. Only after I got home did I notice it had a 26" barrel instead of a 20".

I am debating on having the barrel cut down to 20" and re-crowned. This is my coyote gun that I hunt / hike with, so a lighter more agile gun would be nicer.

Any thoughts on the pros / cons.

If losing up to 150' per second isn't a problem I dont know of any cons...rich

A barrel heavy rifle isn't a good thing. I would sacrifice a little speed for a better balanced rifle
