Barrel Cleaning

I just aquired a used Penrod built 30-06 with a Krieger barrel. I am cleaning with a brush wrapped with blue shop towel and J-B bore paste. The Lands in the barrel are copper colored. Is this normal? Can't seem to get rid of the copper color no matter how many times I run the patch thru.

I have tried lots of different cleaning products and the two best by far are Bore Tech Eliminator and Wipeout.

With BTE soak a patch and wet the bore good. Pass a nylon brush through a few times to work it in. Wait 20 min and dry patch out. Repeat until you see no more blue, then repeat and wait 40 min. Repeat until you see no more blue and your barrel should be almost perfectly clean.

With Wipeout, spray down the bore and make sure you have a wad of paper towel in the chamber to keep it from spraying down into the action. Let it soak for 8 hrs, dry patch and repeat until the dry patch shows no more blue. Your bore is now down to bare metal. BTE is quicker and Wipeout requires less effort.

You're welcome Heeler, it is pretty much foolproof. A couple of other things. Do not use a brass jag when using BTE. It is potent quick acting stuff and will eat the brass and give you a false indication on your patch. You can test this by wetting a patch and rubbing it on a brass jag. It will turn the patch blue almost instantly. I use nickel plated. You can use plastic in a pinch if your patch isn't too tight.

When soaking with BTE or Wipeout, keep your barrel level and turn it over a couple of times so it works all sides of the bore equally, and keep a paper towel under the muzzle to catch any residue that might drip out if your inside.

I completly agree with Mark. I use the wipeout when I get home from a match, leave it overnight, then run a wet patch and ALL the blue comes out. If I'm cleaning at the range between groups, loads, etc, I will use the BT Eliminator with nylon brushes and patches. I'm so anal, I don't pull the brushes back through, although I don't think it matter. Mark was right-on about the cloth in the action, I use a latex rubber "finger cot" over the muzzle after I squirt the foam in. They are like miniature condoms, you put over your finger when you have a cut. works great keeping the solvent from running out of the barrel.

If you have access to a gunsmith with a bore scope, he can diagnos any problems you might have. Most "custom" barrels don't copper much

Think you might have brand new rifling under all that copper?

I use the latest synthetic military type cleaning chem and lube and copper fouling is no problem. You might consider doing the same. Also, it is low toxicity, which was my main reason for switching.

Easy fix----I have a bore scope and this works period. Get some Iosso Paste and the corresponding blue brush they sell. Follow the instructions and in less than 10 minutes you will be down to bare steel.
