I am still resistant to getting a smart phone/ i-phone. Frankly, I just don't want to pay for it...

Is there still an option to have ballistic software in a mobile platform without having a phone?

Not sure, but I think I can get an Ipod touch and use it. Is that right? Can I get a worthwhile app on an Ipod touch? Would the app work in the middle of nowhere with no Wi-Fi?

I remember guys used to use a thing called a "Palm" or something like that. Is something like that still available?

iPod Touch or used iPhone (doesn't need phone service) are your best bet, IMO. Lots of good apps - just google for those.

I used an ipod Touch for a couple of years before I got an iPhone, and the software works great in the Touch.

Two things now with an iPhone that you can't do with the touch -

1. Instant weather conditions from the nearest weather site are downloaded into your favorite program. No, you don't have an included weather meter but often it's far closer than using standard parameters.

2. GPS ability with the phone allows me to leave my separate (and larger) GPS at home.

There are more advantages to having the phone, but those two come to mind immediately when thinking of hunting and shooting.

Most of the areas I hunt, have no phone signal. I too am looking for something to use. I was thinking a simple tablet of some sort. What program do most of you guys use?

You don't need a phone signal for the GPS to work.
If you have signal early in the day you can always sync the weather data and go from there.

In any event, I used Shooter both on my ipod Touch and currently on my iPhone.
