Badlands BD-2 load data

I ran some numbers in my ballistics calculator and if I were able to push the 160 SBD-2 at least 3050 FPS, then I would have plenty of speed and energy on target at 1000 yards. The calculator is saying 1680fps out to 1150 with 1004 ft-lbf of energy on target.

I think I remember someone stating the SBD-2 will open up down to 1200 fps? My memory may be off though.
No, it's 1700fps, is when they will for sure open.

Some of the CE Lazers are stated to open at 1200 fps.

It opens reliably at 1700 fps, so the effective range is determined by how far it is to 1700 fps which is largely dependent upon altitude you are hunting at.

No, there's some photos on the fb page showing shots into ballistics gel at around 1600fps with okay expansion. I plan to keep all hits above 1800fps.
An excellent rule of thumb; keep higher than the recommended minimum velocity for a bullet to effectively expand at POI, regardless of whether it is a lead or lead-free bullet.

Just checked my ballistics calculator and the 275's out of my 338NM were going an estimated 1900FPS when they impacted the moose a few years back. It had penetration all the way through, and hit bone on the way out. It also still had an estimated 2220 ft-lbf upon impact.

Guess I just need to hurry up and get my 375 EnABELR built. Estimated 1900 FPS and 3297 ft-lbf at 1150 yards with the 390 grain SBD-2. That's assuming I get 2800 FPS at the muzzle.

Yup, this was a 2113 fps impact into a large bull elk with the first gen .338 270 super bull dozer, said to also be good down to either 1700 or 1800 iirc. The new ones are supposed to be a little better, I haven't recovered one yet so i dont know. While it did open, I don't think I would have wanted to take this bullet that low.

Personally, 1900 would be my preferred minimum unless I saw better expansion on an animal around that low impact velocity. Then again, at my elevation of 6k, we don't shoot far enough to get that low, so its not really an issue. And we have shot a few elk at or over 1k.

I have considered building a 37 xc because of that bullet ha ha. WHOP!

Are you considering the ENABELR to hunt with?

This is my thoughts.

Going to run a ladder tomorrow. If I can get the 205 up to 2900 then I'll have 2000 FPS at 1000 yards and 8000 ASL.

That's likely farther than I'll ever shoot which gives me an additional margin of safety.
