Is AR 500 necesarry past 500 yds? I understand the need for it at shorter ranges, but out past 500 I shoot regular 3/8 plate with my magnum rifles and it doesn't make a dent. Why would I need AR 500 for long range?

A. Where in Texas are you that you can shoot 500 yards?

B. I think the idea is that the bullet shatters on the hard steel, not craters it and creates ricochets or worst.

But I do see your point.

And I have some targets made of AR500 for that very purpose.

I'm in Menard. I am fortunate enough to have my own 800yd range and Ive got a couple spots where I can shoot past 1000.

What kind of 3/8" plate are you shooting?

I have a ~18" piece of mild steel that takes a serious beating even at 1100yds.

Two hits at 1007 yards on 1/2" mild steel plate.

Two hits at 850 same plate

I have holes from a 7-300 that sailed right through mild steel at 800 plus.

my target is a 16" round 3/8 thick ar400 steel gong it is at 250yds my 7mm shooting accubonds at 2950 fps doesn't hurt it, but my buddy's 7mm 139 sst at 3210 leaves a vary small dent.

I have come to the conclusion that my gong must be made of some sort of hardened steel. It was made from a piece of scrap so there is no telling what it is exactly. Magnum calibers don't make even a slight dent when they hit it.
