Ok, been thinking about a big 7mm to push the 180gr VLD's or 200gr Wildcats. I know Kirby has the 7mm Allen Mag that is based on a .338 lapua but is anyone shooting just a plain .338 Lapua necked down to a 7mm?

For those of you shooting this round, what kind of performance are you getting?

Thanks,
Jon

I think eddybo is shooting the 7mm-338laupa.

Some one has it out there. I have a 7mm Alllen Mag. It shoots 160 accbounds at 3600 fps .

What I have to do this winter is work up losads for the 180 then the 200 grs.

If you can get the 200 grs will be the next thing. I e-mailed Paul from Wildcat 3 times now, no luck yet.

Was going to start a thread on that soon.

I know this thread was started some time ago, but finally I took the jump and built a 7mm-338 lapua mag.
It took about 8 months.
So far I'm running a few more different loads on the ammo, but the best we have achieved has been, Nosler accubond 160gns bullets, 92 grain retumbo
with 3500 FPS. Its awesome.
The rifle was build in Montana. Gun Smith Dave Young.
28 inch number 7 contour barrel 9 inch twist lilja brarrel.
defiance action
mcmillan lazzarotti stock
muzzel break
Huskemaw scope
jewell trigger

Welcome to LRH and enjoy!

Dave is quite the smith and I am 15 minutes away from him. I too would like to see some pictures of the rig, load, and whatever else you can share. :D

I was chatting with a guy at the range the other day. His bench rest rifle is a 7mm-338. He is shooting 180 gr berber hybrids at an mv of 3400 f/s. Sorry, I don't know more details than that. Well, he thought the barrel would be gone in 700-800 rounds, as I recall.

I will get some photo's on here over the weekend, and a loaded round to.
As far as barrel life is concern, I spoke to Dave about just that.
He mentioned with proper care and 3 shots patterns and letting the barrel cool not taking that 4-5th shot. The barrel will have a long life.
Also 800 rounds for me at least with a rifle that is dead on for that one shot kill out in the field, that's a long time.
I keep my loads tight consistant and seldom shoot more than 5 shots just to sight in. gun)

Here are some photo's of the the rifle and a loaded round next to a 264 Win Mag
I was able to get 3375-3400 FPS so far, Dave was able to achieve 3500, but he at a much higher altitude.

Common guys 250 shot barrel life are you kidding, I was hoping for just 75.

So far this is my test trget at 100 yards with the bullet seated 50 thousands off the lands. I've tried further down but not as good, slightly wider spread.

Would that not equate to the already commercially available 7mm Rem Ultra Mag?
Yes, the case dimensions are diferent however when comparing case capacity they would be very similar in volume, therefore similar in performance.

Steyr, your 100 percent correct the two round are very similar all around, the Lapua is just a bit faster and uses a bit more power.

But with that said, as I had discussed for some time with my gunsmith, the Lapua Brass is a much a better brass and holds up a lot longer life than the others when loading, and the fact that the bolt is still a 416 base, which always gives me room if I decide to change to a reg. Lapua 338 or what ever, its a matter of changing my barrel.
See I had the Bolt 1st. just was not sure if I really wanted a reg 338 Lapua.
I simply wanted to make a wild cat.
Maybe next barrel I'll cahnge it to a 30-338:D
