I lived in Idaho for many years and did the majority of my elk hunting in unit 10. I killed 11 bulls in 13 seasons there. I also guided in 10 for a season and spent uncountable days camping, scouting and trout fishing there.
It's been over a decade since I've lived and hunted in Idaho but I still manage to camp and fish along the North Fork of the Clearwater every few years for old times sake.
Wolves have wreaked havoc in that area and I hear that even some outfitters have pulled out, but I understand that there are still some elk if you know how to hunt them.
The Bitteroots are steep and thick in general and you have to cover alot of ground and hunt in the timber in order to be successful. There are some long range opportunities but glassing huge areas from open ridgetops is rare there. As in most places leaving the roads behind is mandatory for success.
If you would like to call me I will share any information I have including specific honey-holes and access to them. I may also be able to dig up some of my old maps.
Send me a PM and I'll give you my phone#
