Per my previous thread, here is the semi complete rifle.....more of a rebarrel than a build. Thanks to you guys for the input and reloading supplies......if I hadn't been able to round them up in the current market I wouldn't have considered this project!
Action is a Mauser 3000L, which I believe is the only left hand commercial Mauser produced. I mated a 1-12 twist, #4 contour McGowen barrel. I ended up cutting it off at 22.5". I used Leupold QD rings and bases to hold a VX3 1.5-5, as it was my intention to add the express sights shown below once I had my mill set up in its new area. However, on 1.5 power, you can see the barrel in the scope and adding front sights may add a distraction situation so I'm rethinking that.....I have never noticed this before, does anyone have a slick fix, or is it just something you deal with? I'll probably stick a base on the front with tape and decide how bad it really is.
Complete weight ended up right around 9 pounds which was a bit more than I was shooting for, but with it's balance at the front of the mag box, and it's pointabiliity (not sure that's a word but I'm sure you know what I mean) I'm not sure what I would have changed.
Load wise I've only played with 286 Gr. Privi bullets and Ramshot Big Game. I settled on 64 grains which was giving me 2435 fps and just over 1" groups at 100. I'm not sure if that's as good as it gets, between the 5x scope and trying to shoot it prone of sand bags I wasn't feeling really confident......the long recoil laying down was not pleasant to say the least, and I'm almost embarrassed to say my neck got knocked out of wack.....next time I'll use a bench and play with seating depth.
Recoil standing is very manageable, my 15 yr old daughter and 13 year old son were both shooting it and were all smiles. Both managed to hit a clay pigeon at 100 yards off hand within 4 shots, so they were either flinching perfect, or were managing it well!
I will be contacting Steve about his 240 gr Shock Hammers in the future here and will update this with any results I come up with.....My primary goal for this was a close range thumper but if I could stretch it out to 300 yds it would be a bonus. On this, is there any testing on these bullets beyond velocity and groups that I could do that would be beneficial? I don't have gel, but if someone has some ideas I'd be open to trying something.
Another odd one I ran into: I picked up some NOS Norma brass, and a couple boxes of new production Norma brass. The NOS brass will not chamber as it almost appears that the brass is .004 thicker at the base of the neck than the new production stuff......I need to pull these apart and see what's really going on but for the time being I'm just using the new stuff which is working fine. You can see the ring on the cases where it's rubbing. I did get one of these to chamber and you can see the rub marks clearer.
Anyway, I need to bed it still and will be using a strip of carbon fiber like in my 7mm Rem Mag stock, but I plan to make a W shape in the bottom and try to stiffen it more.
