any one have any experience with the 87gr Berger/Hunter in A 243?? Trying to work up loads. Ended up with over 500 of these bullets. Loading for A Remington 700 243 with A 24" barrel. So far best I have come up with is IMR 4064 at average of 2978fps. Oal of 2.800"
This is 15,000" off the lans. Best group at 100 was just over 3/8". I think it wil do better. Any ideas??

I'd move to 4350 and see if you can find more velocity to go with that accuracy.

John
I trued IMR 4451 got more valosity but group opened up to over 1"
I use H4350 for my 6XC with A 30" barrel with almost 1 hole at 100. This group is with the 4064.

Can't comment as I was just looking to load some rounds with the 87gr Berger as well. In for any information as well!

The 2 groups were shot using IMR 4064 powder.
Left side was 36.5gr & the right side target was 36.7gr.
Bullets seated to 2.800" which is 15,000th off the lans of my Gun. Now backing load 36.6gr IMR 4064 and seat the Bullets at and see how they group.
2.750 - 2.770 2.795- then to 2.810".

I think a powder that would be worth a look at is RL16.

I have not used the 87gr vld's but I have gotten the best results with 87gr v-max and 95gr vld bullets using RL16 in my 243.

Forgot to mention my load with the 87gr v-max is a little over 3200 fps with a 22" barrel.
Load the 87gr VMax for my Remington R25-243 pushing it with if I remember right I think 40.8gr H380. Have not Chronographed the load yet.

How are you guys liking the 85gr Vmax? Heck of a lot more cost effective to shoot than the Berger. Just wasn't sure how they are on bigger game like hogs or whitetail.

I am loading 87gr VMax
They work great. It is all in Bullet placement on Deer. Hogs not so much unless you are going to clean & eat them.

So I had my wife use them last year on her mule deer hunt. She is running a Tikka 243 1/10 twist with the 20 or 21 inch barrel. I did not have a lot of time, and powder like 4350 was hard to come by. I loaded them up with H4831, berger load manual susgested length, and they shot about .3 to .4 MOA. I could cover 5 shots with a dime easy. She's not had a lot of experience on her gun but I was able to run her out to 800 yards hitting 6 to 8 inch rocks on the second shooting outing with them. I finally got some 4350 but I havn't developed a load yet with it. I was fooling around and loaded up 5 rounds with it and it shoot about the same as above just faster and about .6 MOA which still is not bad. Its running 100fps faster than the 4831. If I remember the 4831 was like 2850fps. Slow for a 243. Anyways now for the good stuff. She took her first mule deer last year about 275yrds away with the 4831 load. Shot it right behind the mid shoulder and was stuck in the off side shoulder about 1 inch into the meat from the hide. Lungs were jello. Buck made one jump and dropped about 10 feet from where he was standing. So the little 87grain bullet will do the job on deer. Now she has the largest buck in the family.
