Hi everyone,

My question is do you have to neck turn your brass when you go from 308 to 7mm08?

Got a bunch of 308 that could become 7mm08 to start testing or should I go strait to lapua or peterson brass?

You will need to know your chamber neck inside diameter and the outside diameter of a dummy round w/bullet that you have run thru your 7-08 die.

Subtract the O.D of dummy round from the ID of your chamber neck. If you have .003" or more clearance, you won't need to turn the necks.

If you don't know the 7-08 neck ID, you can measure the outside of a neck fired in your 7-08 and add .001" to get a close ID.

Thank will measure that. The rifle will be in my possession in a few week, my smith building à stock for it, it à remington 1980 clean as new

I never have had to on 308 to 7-08, but if your 'smith put a rather tight chamber in the rifle, you might want to skim turn for a few thou. clearance and better neck uniformity... I have to skim turn with rp 7rum brass in my Brux barreled 7rum...

The only modification on the rifle is the stock, other wise is as it was born in 1980. Dont know if it have a tight chamber

Agreed with dok7mm &Lefty7mmstw,plus if the rifles in that good of a shape ,as you say you'll probably have to turn the necks to be safe ,Or trade that 308 brass for 708 brass . Your call good luck n Cheers!.

Remington made millions of Excellent rifles, their as American as apple pie in my book !!!, of all the reloading I've done , I've never been set up to turn brass necks ,yes it's another step but it can save coin, just like annealing does ,Cheers 😉

As Dok7mm said measure a fired case if you have one, add 1-2 thousandths for 'spring back' effect and that's approx your neck OD in the chamber.

If Gun is factory chambered SAAMI reamer, most likely, you ll probably not need to turn the case necks. Take one of those sized down 308 cases, seat a bullet and see if it chambers easily.

You can still skim turn the necks if you want more uniformity.

BTW, when I was a 12 year old kid and Uncle taught me too load all my brass came from 30-06 picked up off the ground. Ran it through my FL 270 die and shot and hunted with that. Never a problem and I had no idea that brass could be turned!! lol. Beginners Luck. 🍀
