7mm Rem Mag

Wow, we truly have started a particular "specimen" measuring contest. The only problem is, we "fan boys" are the ONLY contributors to this particular thread citing data & statistical fact; i've seen nothing in rebuttal other than the good ole "nanny-nanny-boo-boo" the OP chose our caliber!

Seriously, debate like you know what you're talking about & we may take you a little more seriously. Mud, you may not have mentioned folks by name but I guarantee it doesn't take much to figure it out. Subjective vs Objective.

I understand what the OP chose, thats fine. I will guarantee anyone that I will lose no sleep over it tonight. What has been done is the continuing of a discussion started. Or is that not what forums & threads are for?

Listen, I don't hold a personal grudge against anyone here, don't take it that way. The point i'm trying to make is: If someone intends to win a debate with me, you have to actually beat me.
Right now, its the "fan boys" 1- "good ole boys" none.

Show me one place where I said "what he should have", just one.

Like I said, reading comprehension

Saying what he should have an thinking what he should have are two differant things! Talk about reading comprehension!!!! Really???
As far as the parameter of this tread, I am not an will not go trough it again an waste all of the good people's time that is on this tread! Wheather the OP choses whatever caliber he wants,we need to encourage him in his quest for Saftey,Enjoyment,Knowlege,an shooting the caliber of his choice!! We answer questions, make suggestions, share knowledge to those that ask! If one or the other has a differant opinion or idea, then great!!! That doesn't meen that one or the other is better!(just differant)!!!

I'll help, here is the original post in regard to the title "7mm Rem Mag":
Enough to kill all north americas big game out to 1000 yards? Some say go with .300....

Sorry, couldn't resist :)

Anyway, with regard to the original post, my only $.02 is to say that it all depends on what 'big game' you are talking about. Is a 7mm Rem Mag enough to kill an elk at 1,000 yards? Sure. A grizzley bear? I would think twice on that one. Anyway, just my two cents. I know the .300 versus the 7mag debate can go on forever, but it wasn't meant to be a debate necessarily...just a question :)

Good luck to the OP

Really? You are the only ones? Since you joined in 2010 you have over 1500 posts that tells me you spend more time on the keyboard than the range. If you want frontal area move to a 338 or a real caliber with some frontal area a 375 not a 30cal over a 7mm there is no difference on game between the two. I will make it simple. You hit an ELK at 1000 yards in the vitals with either and it dies. I also asked about your comment on John and his shooting being not affected by internal performance and you come off with this rant of yours and ignored the question. So tell me why John is having such good success and others with a 7mm rem? If a 300 win is that much better or better at all why are they not using it? I figure anyone can go to JBM and run numbers and since the 300 win was compared to the STW go run a 215 30cal Berger at 2900 vs. 7mm 180gr Berger tactical at 3150 or 3200fps. Tell us which one has more velocity, energy, less wind drift and time of flight at 1000 yards. That will end that debate real quick. If you want your 300 to have a real *** whooping run a 7mm wildcat 200gr with a tested BC of .711 at 3000fps. I have owned several 300 wins, 7mm mags and 7mm STW's and have taken game at long range meaning over 500 yards with all 3. The 300 win 7mm rem are equal, 7mm STW is better than the two. I would be willing to bet the 2 barking the loudest about the 300 win cannot say the same.

So now you're a mind reader? Yes, reading comprehension, not mind reading.

Yup, the reason and purpose of the thread, that's what I was answering.

Did you read this from me to the OP???

To the OP good luck with your rifle and have a good time with LR shooting!

Cheers,

Mark

If one or the other has a differant opinion or idea, then great!!! That doesn't meen that one or the other is better!(just differant)!!!

Actually, some things are opinions and some things are facts. Bigger cartridges are better killers. That comes under the fact heading.

Oh boy, now we are in to wildcats...I'll get the popcorn :)

Seriously though, if we could spend this much time and anger with our politicians, we probably wouldn't have to worry about any of these gun laws coming to fruition! Just another of my basic thoughts, hahaha :)

MontanaRifleman,

You wanted to get into a measuring contest with your 300 RUM comments and comparing it to a 7mm mag so that is why you got the comment on the 300 rum.

I see you're a mind reader too. Not even close.

As for recoil the 300 rum is not bad and pretty mild compared to some.

The 300 RUM is one of the most nastiest kicking rifles there is, especially with warm loads pushing 200+ gr bullets. I use a slip on recoil pad. Works very good.

Yes I would recommend the 7mm mag for 1000 yard Elk and same with the 300 Win and they both stop there unless you are over 9000ft you might get 1200 out of either. I am also going to state a 7mm STW is better than either of the two.

Once again, I won't say the 7RM can't kill elk @1000 yds, but I would not recommend it for that use. As for the 7RM or STW being as good or better than the 300 WM at killing, well that is plain silly. I base my estimations on facts like bullet size and weight and KE, stuff like that. I don't believe in the tooth fairy.

A 308 caliber bullet weighing 215 gr going the same velocity as a 7mm bullet weighing 180 gr is going to cause significantly more damage than the smaller bullet. That's not an opinion, that's a fact, not opinion voodoo or magic.

So now you're a mind reader? Yes, reading comprehension, not mind reading.
Never said nothing about being a mind reader!

I did answer it!!

Did you read this from me to the OP???
Nope!! No need too!

Opinions Vary! Fact about bigger is better, Prove It!!!!!

Overkill?? What is Overkill?? If one person likes one caliber an another person likes something else, where does overkill come in to play?

Mr. Tinsley,

Here is a picture of my 7mm Mag.

The rifle is a complete joy to shoot. Berger 180 VLD's have shown groups in the upper 2s. This upcoming hunting season the rifle will be in the back of my truck waiting for the opportunity to hunt should that occasion arise. The likely outcome will probably be that the gun sits in the case and the 338 ends up in the field. What a great 7mm and totally capable of harvesting any deer up to 1000. Yet I will probably choose the big 338. My choice. This past hunting season I had the opportunity to help two female hunters, one with a bull elk and one with the biggest white-tail buck I had seen that year. One female hunter had never hunted before and this would be her first experience. Both hunters with some practice were capable of 1/2 MOA shots at extended range. Successful results, sort of speak. The elk was shot at 747 yards. Spotting instantly indicated the elk was hit, the head dropped, the elk stood up walked less than 20 feet and fell over out of sight. The deer was shot at 868 yards and instantly hit the dirt. The elk was shot in the neck area just in front of where the dark and light brown meet. Best guess I misjudged wind speed resulting in the neck shot. The deer was hit behind the diaphragm. I definitely misread the wind speed on that shot. Both were shooting the 300 gr Berger and shock damage was massive. The young ladies were smiling ear to ear with their hunts. Both animals were recovered no more than 20 feet from where they were shot.

Both of these animals were hit in the edges of the vital zones. The heavy 300 finished the job. I'm not so certain the 7mm would have put the animals down that quickly with the same shot placement with the 180's. Overkill? dead is dead and I'll take the higher energy performance gun if it puts the animal DRT vs. having to track the animal to it's final resting place. Best intentions can still lead to not the best shot placement and the 300's did their job on these two hunts. I know of two happy hunters this past season.

The discussion of this post is not to say this caliber or that caliber is or isn't better but rather to consider a potentially more capable option if available. I love my 7mm and "like" my 388 but will still take the most capable gun when the conditions call for it.

What ever caliber you choose, take the time to learn as much as you can about its potential and mostly, enjoy.

That tells us a lot about your intellect. Let's see now, I think Kirby Allen and Shawn Carlock have over 5000 posts, they must have about about zero experiece.

Keep digging that hole deeper.

If you,Montana man can use what living brain cells you have left from being so full of your self!! I used your quote an answered all of your questions!!
That's Fact!!

As you say,Later!!
