I just had a 7 SAUM built on a Tac-30 short action. I was planning on shooting a 168 or 180 Berger. When I checked the oal to touch rifling its a full .1 (tenth) or should I say 100 thousands longer than box mag. I don't think you can get a berger VLD to jump that far and shoot. Box mag will go about 2.83 and the 168 goes 2.915!!!! Options??

I have a 7 saum that consists of a Douglas barrel screwed on a Savage action. I can't get a 162 gr Amax(2.970) to reach the lands and still fit in the mag, but the 160 gr Accubond(2.880) will, just barely. Both are .005 off the lands.

I have a drop chart for the A max out to 700 yds, I use them single shot for long range hunting shots or target practice. Up until I decide to take a shot over 400 yds I have the ABs loaded in the chamber and mag in case something steps out close.

Thanks Winmagman, Very interesting. I am going to have to go back to the range and try a few. I really thing 50 or 60 thousands is a bunch. But it may work. I also am going to use this gun for tac matches, so I need these bullets. Adios

Try the extended mag box from www.wyattsoutdoor.com. The box will let you load to ~ 3.00 OAL. Stiller cuts his hunting actions for the long box (bolt stop and rear of action) but the TAC series is cut for the standard box.

Thanks GLZ, I knew there was a bottom metal and box that was bigger I just couldn't find it and was in too big of a hurry. Gunsmith was needing it. I'm going to call them Monday and see if it will fit my Tac 30. Oh, to others looking the 168 smk's are shooting really good @ 2.83 I just don't know if this is a very good hunting bullet??

Most of the new high pressure cartridges have long throats unless you have a short throat
chamber job done.

Most people will do this if there intent is to use the Berger's or other secant ojive bullets.

Berger has changed their opinions on bullet seating depths and now say that you can seat
them longer than in the past. (Over .100 thousandths off the lands.

So I would give them a try @ mag length and if they did not work then try something like
an Accubond.

For you guys reading this who have not had a similar problem.
This is one of life's lessons we all seam to have to learn the HARD way. This should be part of the discussion you have with your smith BEFORE the rifle is built.
I now buy my own reamer for every rifle I have my smith chamber, then if things don't work right I only have the guy in the mirror to blame.
Good luck

Even that isn't foolproof.........I had a 7 SAUM built by a well known builder a few years ago and discussed OAL with the builder before sending the barrel and action.......and.......I sent him a sample cartridge with the bullet loaded to the desired OAL along with the action and barrel......... and ........wrote a note reminding him about our OAL discussion and included it in the package with the barrel action and sample cartridge..........he still cut the chamber too long!!!

He ended up installing a Wyatt's extended mag box and making a custom follower at no charge to me...........

I thought about this same situation before I started my custom build. I decided to just go with a single shot instead of a repeater. That way I didn't have any constraints for OAL. Most of my buddies have given me some lip about my decision. Can't wait to shut them up on the range. Just one more week till she's dome!
