6mm Creedmoor first elk hunt

Genuinely curious, what evidence leads you to say you would not? Is it based on seeing it not work?

There's guys reliably punching through moose shoulders (blades and knuckles) with 77, 80, and 88 grain .223 and .22CM's.

What evidence would it take to convince you that a good 6mm bullet is an effective elk killer?
I'd like to see that, seeing is believing. Who is shooting moose with a 223 or a 22CM? Send me link to that video I'd like to see it. I guess the moose is DRT also. Have you ever seen a moose in person up close, like dead on the ground?

There's a whole thread on rokslide. People are shooting literally everything with a 223. Grizzly, moose, walrus.
Here's a video with a 22arc on a moose. Pretty much par for the course with a non-CNS hit on a moose.

A bad shot is when you hit bone 🍖 with that tiny bullet and not rib cage. I was a big Berger fan until my wife made a bad shot @ 300ish with 270 WSM 140 Berger VLD she hit the Elk right in the knuckle it passed through the knuckle and stop without penetrating the rib cage. Had to chance the Elk for 2 hours finally killing it. It was awful she ended up shooting a rear leg off while it was running and it didn't end there, he kept going on two legs front back on opposite sides. I don't use anything but LRX and Accubonds anymore both open up quickly. I mean if you shot him in the guts or *** more than likely the chase is on. Still rather be using a bullet that's going to drive on through. Maybe you're that good of a marksman and you never have to experience a bad shot I hope not. But maybe it might just happen with that bull of a lifetime that would be 😞.

Thank you for that. I've had this conversation tons of times and I've almost never had someone provide a concrete example like that. It's almost always rooted in "conventional wisdom" or "never tried it but sure it wouldn't work", or "made a perfect shot and he still runnoft".

I've read a fair bit from dog trackers that do big game recovery and they all say the same thing... For every one they recover that was shot well and ran a long way, there's 20 that were "hit great but the bullet blew up on the shoulder" that ended up having a hole in the leg or guts or brisket or anywhere but the vitals.

I do think it's heavily bullet dependant, and the smaller the bullet is the more critical it is to use a good one. There's lots of .30 cal bullets that will be anywhere from moderately effective to really effective, and some that aren't going to work well. There's lots of 6mm bullets that won't work very well, an few that work fine, and a few that are excellent.

Thankfully I haven't been part of many rodeos. I haven't been part of any that were due to too little gun. I have been on a couple that were due to poor shooting, usually connected to rifles the shooter was afraid of.

Again, I appreciate the real life experience that informs your opinion. If I had that happen to my wife or kid I might feel differently than I do.

I'm done here it's like talking to Joe Biden and Kamala Harris and the rest of the leftist that Jan 6 wasn't an insurrection and the Feds set it up. Live and learn, I'm 60 so I've learned not to learn the hard way. Hopefully you shoot straight.
Thank god. You've been at it since 7am and seem to like belittling and insulting people. Not a way for a 30 day member to make any new friendly acquaintances. Just because someone doesn't like your opinion or agree with you doesn't make them a "leftist". The ignore button is up top so you can just wash your hands of it.

Yea the Author also doesn't tell you he shot his back leg off and how he cut the film when he's standing there for 5 minutes before he died ether. That lung damage wasn't nothing I'll show you some lung damage after Xmas. I just think it's a sad day in the hunting world when it comes to this, I would have more of an understanding if you couldn't afford to shoot anything else that would be a more acceptable. Good luck 🍀 shoot straight !!!

Just last week. Father-in-law with my wife. This was his second elk ever and it had been 40 years since his last one. 6x47 Lapua I built, shooting a 105 Berger. One shot at 587yards. She didn't go 30 yards. Put it in the right spot and have enough speed to penetrate and expand and you will be fine.

My apologies have a lovely evening.

In the article the author wrote to accompany the video, he does talk about his poor second shot that went through 10" of hind quarter muscle, shattered the femur, and kept penetrating past that.
Here's a photo of that femur https://rokslide.com/forums/threads/6mm-243-hunting-success-on-big-game.284525/post-3859469

What's the deal with a cut video/longer time to death? I haven't seen anything about that. If you've got some info on it I'd love to see it.

Also, a few more examples... There's a few more that I didn't find on a quick search. That thread is an eye opener for sure.

Ive hunted all my life with a 243 my Dad bought me when i was 16. Shot a lot of Black Tail, Black bears and Antelope but never an Elk. My Rem 700 is gone but now i have a 6mm Creedmoor. TS Customs. 1x7.5. I've mostly loaded 90 gr Scirocco ll and dont see a reason to change. I will be going on my first Elk hunt this year. I guess i could borrow my brother in laws 7mm Rem Mag but im so use to and confident in the 6 mm. Your thoughts
Son almost exclusively hunts with 6mm CM ises 103hr ELD-X one shot kills out to 400 metres

Well said.
Thanks! I think one of the things that gets me going is that it seems like 95% of people that try the heavy for caliber match bullets in smaller diameters end up really liking them, and 95% of the "it's not enough gun" people have never tried them and are basing their position on, at best, experience with those cartridges using bullets that are nowhere near the top of the heap for performance. At worst, basing their position on emotion and conventional wisdom that they haven't investigated for themselves.

On the one hand I get it. I was super skeptical, and I'm not personally very interested in finding out for myself the lower limit of what produces good terminal results (because by definition that would involve going too far and shooting animals with stuff that doesn't kill them well). But there's so much info out there now showing smaller stuff that is easier and cheaper to shoot, can do a metric ton of practice with, suppresses well (I've gotten to a point where I hate muzzle brakes), and kills extremely well.

I really appreciate all your input and i agree with what you guys are saying no doubt. I started out years ago shooting a 6mm Remington I was new to reloading and shot 40 rounds every Saturday morning on Jackrabbits back then they were everywhere. I got pretty good. I shot a lot of Blacktails and Blackbears while going to school in California. That was pre liberal California. I never felt undergunned and spent all summer shooting ground squirrels a lot of shooting. My next 6 was a 243 Then down the road it was a 243 AI. I was told many times that a 243 was not a Black Bear cartridge. Never understood why. Hit right they never went very far

When hunting in area 222 in Nevada for deer I saw a lot of Elk and some big bulls The big mule deer i shot all were DRT. My last Black Bear was shot with the 243 AI 95 gr Berger 211 yards one shot rolled down into the brush. I just have a lot of confidence and ive never taken a really long shot. One Antelope at 377 yards. 95 gr LRX.
