6mm Creedmoor first elk hunt

I've shot a few elk with 50 and 54 caliber balls and a few handguns, and they all died and filled my freezers. Point being, everything is relative.
I bet you were close to them . I always wanted to use my .50 cal. M/L on an elk. Would of had a great opportunity this year at 80 yds. on a nice bull. That or my 460 S&W.

Well…a well placed shot will do the job on any animal. That said, you have a lot less margin for error with a 6mm on elk. I like to have as many advantages as possible when I go hunting, so I don't hunt animals with rifles I don't think gives me that advantage.

You can certainly go elk hunting with a 6mm, but you should keep in mind that you will be under-gunned.

What about the elk I and others have killed with 25-06's and 257 Wby's? Should they not have died?

Like so many, this thread and "opinions" can go on forever. How in the world did our fore fathers kill elk with muzzle loader balls, bows and arrows and spears? ;)
Everyone can bring whatever they want out elk hunting, I will be bringing my 7 SAUM and no one can be convincing me otherwise. Like many others have said you can kill an elk with a 6CM, we just don't recommend it.

You know what's interesting here🧐
Everyone talks about the ones they have killed. And nothing about the ones they have wounded or had to shoot 6 times
before they finally died. I myself have had quite a few animals slip away to die in agony. A lot a factors come in to play when taking an animals life, one being the ole buck fever 🤒. But probably know one on this thread has ever had it, big ole rough and tough men. To me one wounded animal is too many, this is why I try and do my research for the animal I'm hunting and what I need to harvest that animal ethically.
If you're going to put all the time and money into a hunt why would you want to go under gunned and a less than adequate bullet selection especially if you have never done it. I went on a Brown Bear hunt this spring I purchased a 338 RPM for the hunt, I didn't have to I already have a 28 nosler, 300 WSM and a 300 WM i just felt the need for a heavier bullet for such a huge animal. What if I get the ole buck fever 🤒. Will luck have it I did get the ole buck fever 🤒 but I still placed an excellent shot @ 150 yards right through the ole boiler room with a 210 TTSX moving 3000 fps, bear ran 75 yards fell over dead. Had I known what I know now I would have purchased a 6 mm creedmoor 🤣

Yea, those M/L shots were in the 40-90 yard ranges and before all the sabots, scopes, etc were allowed and before I went to heavier bullet designs. I was a true originalist when I was BP hunting in those days, and except for Pyrodex, I still do not use modern M/L equipment today.

The handguns ranged a little farther out and have been in 357 Herrett and 44 Mag (Contender and revolver)

Ive hunted all my life with a 243 my Dad bought me when i was 16. Shot a lot of Black Tail, Black bears and Antelope but never an Elk. My Rem 700 is gone but now i have a 6mm Creedmoor. TS Customs. 1x7.5. I've mostly loaded 90 gr Scirocco ll and dont see a reason to change. I will be going on my first Elk hunt this year. I guess i could borrow my brother in laws 7mm Rem Mag but im so use to and confident in the 6 mm. Your thoughts
I think the 6mmm would do, in fact; the .243 caliber has done it many times, but... perhaps not the best choice to do it with. It would for sure be about bullet selection and the range you take the shot at. I'd take the 7mm Rem Mag. Just my 0.2 Cheers

I just did a quickie, just to prove he doesn't know what he's talking about. Anyone with a brain should know a 6 mm doesn't have the energy of a 338 win mag. Hunters like him is the reason you see animals wounded and laying around rotted up.

Anyone with a brain huh… these are both adjusted for current atmospheric conditions.

I had a 6.5SS built a few years ago and have used on several elk. Mostly with a 122gr PVA Cayuga at 3400fps only one has been closer than 400 yards. I haven't shot one twice with that rifle until this year. I was shooting 156gr Bergers at 3055fps. First shot on a bedded cow at 480y just above the heart, she was dead with that one but she stood up. I hit her a second time a couple inches up and one rib back she stood there and took it so I hit her again in the same area. She finally laid down in the same bed. When her head flopped over I shot the calf standing next to her one in the middle of the lungs and it went down. The chest cavity of that cow was completely jello.

It's crazy what they can take sometimes. I shot a cow with a 6.8spc that fell over with one chest shot and I have shot them multiple times in the chest with a 338 Lapua. I'm pretty quick to shoot twice though I hate chasing wounded elk.

Never heard of a PVA Cayuga. Is this something from Patriot Valley Arms or something? Monometal, bonded or cup & core? Just curious. I have a second 7SS barrel on it's way as we speak.

Whatever 338 is going faster than 2421@ 100 yards with 225 gr bullet
And the 6CM you can't load it hot enough to run 2868@ 100 yards with 108 gr bullet.
Under any atmospheric conditions. More like muzzle velocity.
I'm sure glad your not loading my ammo.

If you read my original post I said if I was going I would bring enough gun. Either my 7rm or my 338wm. I would also limit my range to 400 yards or less.

I just don't think you're giving the 6mm much credit.
My 338 is a poor performer because that's the only bullet and velocity charge that will produce acceptable accuracy.

They are both velocity readings from my garmen. Its a 110gn A-tip running around 3030 from a 29 inch barrel in my PRS rig. I'm not even pushing it to max. About 2% below max charge.
