So, I have some Berger 140gr VLD's and was wondering which powder would be a good one to start with. I have RL19, RL22, IMR4350 and H4831. But open to suggestions. Rifle is an older Steyr Mannlicher M.
I m using R22 in my Fieldcraft with 147 Eldm. Accuracy better than IMR4831 I tried. It ll shoot .5-.6" 3 shot groups. Using 3.1 OAL in my rifle. .050 bullet jump.
Flop a coin. They all will work. Depending on your barrel length you might get a little more velocity out of RL 22 and H4831 with long barrels. I have shot a bunch of IMR and AA 4350 in my rifles with 120 gr bullets and heaver and have gotten outstanding accuracy with really good velocity. All my rifles are 96 Mausers and I had to keep the pressure under 46000 CUP but with max loads according to Accurate manual with AA 4350 that are under this pressure with the long 29" barrels I still can get 3000 fps with 120's and 2800 with 140's. I have one sported rifle that I salvaged from some Bubba that had started hacking on it already. I left the long 29" barrel on it for the velocity increase possible with the lower pressure loads. I have used this rifle to make some pretty long over bean fields shots on deer. The others are stock military and I have used a lot of IMR 4895 with 140 Sierra Match Kings running in the 2500 fps range for military rifle matches with these rifles. SUPER ACCURATE.
I've got two 6.5x55's and they like different powders. While h4831sc has been slower than some of the RL powders, it doesn't have the large velocity swings with temperature changes. RL 26 gave me the greatest speeds, but h4831 gave me the best consistency. RL 22 gave me the greatest accuracy above 120 grain bullets. I'm sticking with Hogdon powders these days.
When I was looking on Quick Load it looks like RL25 and RL26 are 2 powders to look at. With my cartridge overal length both would give 2800 + out of a 22 inch barrel. I haveloaded some 140 SST Hornady's to try with RL25. MY WIN M70 Father weight liked RL22 and Barnes 127 LRX. With several groups under .4 MOA at 100yds.
