Hello all.
I'm a fairly new reloader...I used to reload quite a bit when I was younger, just now getting back into now that the boys are older. I've been doing load development for a 30-06 and tried 3 different kinds of brass, 2 different primers and 4 different bullets before I finally got it worked out. So I'm done with my 30-06 for a little bit.

I'm having a 6.5x284 barrel built that should be ready in about a month. I know I'm going to be very anxious to shoot it when it's ready so I'm going to buy the reloading supplies I need to start the process. Here's my simple questions... I don't want to buy more and more stuff, over and over again. So,

1. What dies would everybody recommend? Full length re-size or collet? Dillon, Hornady, Lee, etc...

2. Is Lapua the absolute best brass to start with?

3. Are the Berger Hunting VLD's what most of you would start with for hunting? I used the Hammer Hunter 166gr. for my 30-06 and they were great. A little expensive and I burned through 50 of them fast. Trying the Bergers this time I think.

4. I have *Hornady H4350, IMR4350, Varget and H414. Are those a good start?

5. I have CCI 200 and CCI BR2 primers are those sufficient?

Any loads you guys have that you could post would very much be appreciated? I made a similar post yesterday that wasn't very specific and didn't get many responses. I need help to cut down on the load development stage.

PLEASE HELP!!!

Thanks in advance!!! Stoti

I have two 6.5-284s. you can look on 6mmbr for more info. I use lapua brass, usually 210m or br-2 primers. h4350 and mrp. 123 scenars and 139s mostly; but I have shot 120 ballistic tips , and 123 and 140 berger.

Thank you,
That's exactly the kind of information I'm looking for!
With the Lapua brass, BR2 primers and H4350 powder, which was what I was planning on starting with, what charge are you running and what kind of accuracy and velocity are you getting. Thanks, Stoti

I have shot only 140 vlds in my 6.5-284s, for them to perform, you'll need a slower powder. H-4831 works well, but velocity usually peaks out around 2900-2935 fps. Retumbo works well and many users are reporting 3000+ fps. Depends on what you're looking for.

Thank you. I've been told IMR4350 and H4350 are both great for this caliber, that's why I'm asking on this forum. Everything is so subjective and there are so many very experienced hand loaders on this forum! I've seen charts that list over 150 powders and both of the 4350's are in the bottom third of burn rates. I'll have to look and see where 4831 falls on that chart. Thanks again, Stoti

what 30-06 ? I have 6 of them ... I get my best groups with mrp and mrp-2 ( not made now) . coues deer are dinks. I shot one with a 120 ballistic tip.

I use rcbs dies, I do not have tight neck chambers. with my heavy target gun and my sendero the groups are small. .2"-.6" ..

It's a Remington 700, LH action, 30-06. One of my threads on here from a while back has a picture of it. I use it for Colombian blacktail, mule deer, hogs and occasionally Elk. HSM Trophy Gold factory ammo shoots good out of it but I wanted something hand load accurate! It's shoots great, I just needed to find the right load. During load development I was switching components too much, instead of changing one variable at a time and I know better. It really screwed me up. I'm dialed in now... 57.8gr. IMR4350, Hammer Hunter 166gr., Hornandy brass, CCI BR2 primers and a coal of 3.330" Stoti

It's everywhere you look , 56-58 grains of Retumbo, Lapua brass and CCI BR2's will send a 140 VLD into the upper 2900's in a 26" barrel. Mine likes 57 grains and a .020" jump , good for 2960 fps and easy single digit ES.
