6.5 or 6.5x284

just tossing this out to learn some, I have model 700 adl that I am considering building off of or selling it and putting cash toward Christensen Ridgeline. Gun is 280 Remington. Smith said to turn into a 28 would be more cost than what it would be worth(not sure what all is involved) but reading more on the 6.5 calibers I am liking the lower recoil issues. I had shoulder surgery last year and I really turned into a softy now and 6.5 seems to be nice in that area? From studying on here the 6.5 Creedmoor is gonna have better barrel life but 6.5x284 has higher performance. What's better trade off for whitetail gun and maybe a couple elk mule deer trips someday down the road ? My head is spinning with all the info on here . Thanks

For a hunting rifle I like the 6.5X284 Norma, it will give you a little more velocity and the long action is whats needed to get that velocity. The CM is cheaper to shoot if you plan on wearing out the barrel.

Doubt I will wear out any barrels, lucky to get 100 rounds a year in. But if this gun turns out to be the recoil friendly piece everyone says it will be then maybe I will get more in throughout the year. Try some long range hogs and coyotes?

I shoot a 260 Remington and absolutely love it! If you are a long range shooter the 6.5 creedmore will run out of gas on an elk at relatively short ranges. Depending on your bullet choice, I'm thinking 500 yards would be about the limit. The 6.5-284 would extend your range but if you shoot a bunch would burn your barrel. 6.5 caliber bullets are hight in sectional density which usually means they kill efficiently. It all depends on the ranges you want to shoot at. 6.5 Creedmore has decent factory ammo at good prices, the 6.5-284 is one you would likely have to load for.

6.5-284 factory ammo is crazy expensive. It is fun loading for it though. Hardly any recoil on my Savage trophy hunter XP. As stated earlier, the creedmoor is a lot cheaper if you plan to shoot a bunch.

I have owned several 6.5 creedmoor Rifles and even a 6.5 creedmoor xp-100 Pistol. They all shot amazing, and I don't think you will be disappointed with one. The creedmoor is easy to shoot and spot your own hits, has good terminal Ballistics and is easy on the pocket book. However, if you like to push the limits and load your own ammo, I like the 6.5-284 Norma! I am building one right now and can't wait to see what it will do. You can look forward to about 300 fps more velocity out of the 6.5-284 Norma than the 6.5 creedmoor with the same bullet. That translates into more pronounced terminal
Performance, and longer effective range.

Creedmoor is a great little round but I would never build a long action into one. It fits a short action great, one of the reasons it excels over the 260. Go with 6.5x284 in your long action or even 260rem in a long action will outrun the creed. 260ai is a better option but takes reloading. A 280ai is another suggestion...you have the brass and nosler makes factory ammo. Shoot lighter 7mm bullets until your shoulder heals more. But the 6.5x284 is a great round

Or split the difference and do a 6.5-280 Ack Imp.

Anything with a 7mm bullet will have more recoil than the 6.5 anything except the 26 Nosler.

My 6.5x55 is a real ***** cat to shoot...another option you should include in your choice.

My 264wm has hardly any recoil compared to either of my 7mmRMs.

I have a 6.5-06 but it has a break...so it don't count.

My 6.5 x 284 is waiting for its first day at the range. I installed and head spaced the barrel last weekend. Loaded ammo this week so I still a little more to do tomorrow before I go Sunday to shoot it.

I truly appreciate all the comments , I am learning a bunch. I was planning on using a break as well to reduce as much recoil as possible from whichever caliber I decide on or smith puts me in. I am not a reloader myself yet but have several buddies who load a bunch that are willing to help me out and get me setup for the round of choice. As well I am sure there are plenty posts on forum for load data. With the action I have now is it more or less difficult to go to 6.5x284 verses the 28? And cost wise as well? This is all very new and want to make sure I am making the right decision!

Do you mean 28nosler when you're saying 28? 28nosler needs a bigger bolt face, modified mag.
Go with a 280ai, same bolt face, same magazine feed, just needs a new barrel. the only cost savings a 280ai would have is you have your 280rem brass to fire form to the 280ai chamber.
6.5x284 is the same bolt face and should feed just fine. But you would have to buy brass.
Either are great choices

6.5x284 all the way. I wouldn't worry about barrel life to much. My neighbor has over 2400 rounds through his. Doesn't shoot as good as it used to. But it's still hangs around 5/8th inch groups at 100 yards
