That will wreak havoc on a group. It is amazing what some factory ammo produces with regard to ES. I pulled out the AR15 at the range and was shooting some older factory ammo this week. I had a 200 fps ES from the same lot. It was all over the spectrum.Well whoever guessed my ES was over 130fps would've been correct. I have never had my my ES that far off and I had over 2 inches of vertical stringing this time around. I am very particular about my loading so after 60 rounds with ramshot magnum I believe it's time to switch to h4831sc. I have not had good luck so far with the ramshot
2,4,1,3,5 from top to bottom. Velocity ranging from 2890 to 3020Order of impacts? First to last.
It was starting to get hot. A few tenths away from light ejector marksHow close to the max charge/book max were you?
I have had some episodes like the one you are experiencing, I have chased powder and seating depth only to find out the most obvious, loose muzzle brake, scope ring mounting torque, action screws, and more recently a pic rail that was loose. I have learn before blaming the barrel or load, check the obvious. One overlooked area with freefloated barrels is clearance. I personally like more than less, especially with less stiff stocks. If they are touching that can cause vertical stringing. Triggers are another area that clearance issues can occur, make sure it's not touching or binding in the stock inlet.Using ramshot magnum, lapua brass, 200 eldx. The group was shot at 100 and I just went up half grain increments till a couple of them hit the same POI with decent grouping and then tuned my seating depth. It's a 10 twist barrel with a muzzle brake shot off bipod with rear bag. I have a leupold mk5 7-35 on it.
I went through this stuff multiple times because of the issues I was having and everything is tight and free floating. Due to the major ES in velocity I believe there was something wrong with the type of powder I was using. After switching to the h4831 i had consistent results in my ladder with finding my maximum. There seems to be a node about 1 grain under pressure signs so I'm going to explore that next weekend and I'll post my resultsI have had some episodes like the one you are experiencing, I have chased powder and seating depth only to find out the most obvious, loose muzzle brake, scope ring mounting torque, action screws, and more recently a pic rail that was loose. If you don't already have one you may want to get a Lee Hand Press to change your COAL while at the range. I used mine today in developing a hunting load for my 6MM ARC bolt gun. Had all the rounds loaded with 28.1gr of LVR with a COAL .005 off L/G. I then shot 2 cold bore rounds to see results then kept cooling the barrel and decreasing COAL by .005 until I found 2 solid impacts then shot a third round at that COAL. I then adjusted scope and had 4 rounds in a 1 inch target. I'll come back and prove that load on another day. I may even decrease COAL to see if I can get it under .5MOA for 2 quick COLD Bore shots.I went through this stuff multiple times because of the issues I was having and everything is tight and free floating. Are you getting the same group pattern after determining your powder node?I've been doing a load workup for my 300 win mag and I can't seem to get the fliers to go away. I found my powder node and then tried to tune the fliers out with my seating depth. I'm doing 5 shot groups and the first 3 are usually stacking on top of each other and then the next 2 are fliers. I am shooting these 5 round groups with about 30 seconds between each shot. Do yall think it's my barrel getting too hot?
