I have a 338 RUM, 28" barrel. I am loading 90gr of RL25, a 300gr SMK. COAL 3.790" my average velocity is 2836. This seems fast to me. One of my buddies is shooting his 338 RUM with 89.7gr of RL25 from the same keg of powder is getting 2710. He has 27" barrel. The difference in velocity seems very high between the two rifles given there is only 1" of barrel and 0.3gr of podwer differnce. Any ideas on why there is so much differnce would help. I am mainly concerned that I might be pushing the my rifle to hard.

1" more barrel in that caliber is probably worth 50fps and you may just have a fast barrel. If you don't have any pressure signs, I wouldn't worry about it. What is your es over the chrony?

There are no pressure signs. I only shot 3 times over the choro 2836,2815, 2836. I plan to put some more rounds across it the week to verify the speeds I got.

vintec,

That seems a bit high but don't look a gift horse in the mouth.:)

I load 101gr US 869 and the 300 SMK in a 26" sporter barrel for 2735 fps. Add another 65 fps or better for another 2" and I'm where your are. If she shoots good just pretend you have an Edge and go with it.:)

if I was you I would be happy I have a 338 edge with a 28" barrel and I'm getting 2836 with 93 grs of retumbo with 300 smk

Definately not complaining, just wondering if anyone thought that was way to fast. Or so fast I may not have a safe load. The gun shots like a dream. I guess if its broke dont fix it.

Had to replace my chrony. I've "worn" out two so far.

The new one reads the above listed load at 2817 average which is up from 3735 with all things being the same except the chrony.

Just shot two shots then adjusted to zero at 200. The two shots were 0.375 MOA. The drop chart development will confirm the velocity.

Should have stayed with the 3735.
You would not need a drop chart with that velocity............:D:DLOL

Seems about right for RL25 in the 338 RUM. The edge typically runs the same speeds but that is with H1000. RL25 in the edge runs over 2900.

Would not a bit slower powder soup it up even more. Say US 869. Me being a velocity hawg.

If this is what an Edge does, it would seem that the Edge should become the 30-30 of LRH.

The Edge seems to be filling one heck of a niche!

According to Quickload, 104g US869 will produce 2814fps w/28" bbl at 63,800 pressure. It is the powder that will push them the fastest that we can get, unless you can find any H870. Other notables are 95.5g Retumbo for 2787fps, 91.2g H1000 for 2744fps, and 88.3g RL25 for 2731fps. THese are all at MAX pressure which is 63,800.

I am using the standard 92g load which is above MAX for quickload by .8g and is in the 65,000K mark. I am getting 2830-2840fps with my 28" bbl over my Crony. I tried 93g as well and was getting 2880fps, but that load is in the 67K range, just as accurate as the 92g load, but I dont need to stress the brass any more. Actually need to probly back down to 91g or so with this new lot anyways as 92g is showing some pressure.

Anyways, I would think with a 30" bbl and a stout load of US869 that 2900-2950fps is about all you can muster up out of the EDGE w/out going over pressure. Of course there is lots of variables and maybe you get a fast barrel and get 3000fps, you could only hope.

I am thinking of trying some Retumbo or US869 myself and see if I can hit 2900fps w/out to much pressure. Will have to wait till elk season is over with though as I dont want to start messing with a new load 2 months before.

All of them were with the EDGE.

I'm about to load up some 215g SGK's with H1000 and Retumbo for $hits and giggles while I wait for my 300's to get here. Am using Rem cases, CCI 250 primers, and OAL of 3.7" which is about .010" off the lands.

According to QL, 103.8g of H1000 is MAX at 3219fps at 109% load density, and 109.1g of Retumbo is MAX at 3281fps at 112.5% load density.

I am going to load up 3 each of H1000 at 103.8, 102.8, and 101.8, and 3 each of Retumbo at 109.1, 108.1, and 107.1

I might get out to shoot them tonight so we'll see what happens.
