Is there ever a good source for brass or loaded ammo that isnt so **** expensive? I've got a Weatherby Mark V that needs a new barrel and I was thinking 338 Lapua. 338 Winny is much more practical and better priced but the Lapua is the Lapua. Be fun to have something big.

The 338 Norma is a better cartridge IMHO.
Have a 338-06, (3) 338WM's and a 338-416 Rigby Improved 45° shoulder. The latter is getting tired and I will be re-barreling, so tossing up whether to stay with the above, I own the reamer, or go with 338 Norma Improved or 33XC. The Lapua case as standard stretches too much, the Improved version stops this somewhat.
Just my experience.

Cheers.

338 lapua is a 338 lapua. Yes looks expensive, but you are getting quality. There are deals coming up every now and then for once fired brass or new loaded lapua. Jill and I have gotten some unbelievable deals from members on this site for 338 lapua brass and other 338 bullets. Just keep looking and if buying fired brass make sure the seller is reputable as most are here. New lapua brass is around $3 per piece. There are sales sometimes. Once fired is usually up to $2,but again deals are out there. We have been very fortunate with the members that sold to us very FAIR!. You may also get some new brass around $1 in bulk, but those deals are very rare. Shooting a 338 lapua is not cheap for the amount of H1000 or Retumbo and quality bullets in each load. If you are using for hunting not that big a problem or cost. If shooting ELR be prepared to spend$s. We are building a 338LMAI so different shoulder and about 100fps more, less trimming..everyone has their own opinion and each one is better than the other.
Good luck

Go with the 338 Lapua, but an Improved version. My 2 cents. 100 cases should last you a lifetime, unless you're high volume shooter.

If your Weatherby has the .532 bolt face I would do the 338 RUM. They are very accurate and basicaly equal to the Lapua. I just had a RUM built on a Weatherby action and love it. To bad I found out after a few rounds that it had the >580 bolt face. It shoots better than me so I won't complain.

What sort of round count can one expect out of one of the big 338s? Like the RUM, Weatherby or Lapua? 600 rounds or so?

They arent all big.
But 3000 fps with a 300 gr would be a good place to start comparing.
Best to sit behind a few watching as they are being shot at say a mile before picking one.
Otherwise you will just end up with a 338.

This is the reason for the 338 edge. You can buy adg or norma brass at reasonable prices. Check your BF because the lapua requires a .590.
My edge does "edge" out the lapua. It also makes the 300 WM look weak when smacking gongs.

I should also note this will likely go on a trip to Africa for plains game, not necessarily a long range target gun.
