I have a .340wby MK V Acc Mark, I want to build for LR but, what would I gain by going to a .338 lapua, .338 RUM, .338 Edge or some other?

The 340 WM is a great cartridge, considering it has been around since 1962. Ihave 20+ yrs. behind mine and it has treated me right. With 225-250 bullets you will be good to go. The other super 338's that you mentioned will be a 100-200fps faster and burn even more powder. They perform better with more energy if the 300 grain bullet is used. The 340 WM will anchor any NAmerican game . My load was 92 gr. IMR 7828, COMPRESSED, and a 225 accubond

.340 Wby is solid cartridge. It was the first big game rifle I bought. I sold it to my Dad a few years back and have been kicking myself since. The .340 Wby is a fine cartridge for LR. It will easily get you to 1k, so dont go re-barreling when you dont need to. If you want to re-barrel anyway I would go with the .338-.378 Wby or .338 Kahn. your action is strong enough for either of those and they outperform the .338 Lapua by a fair margine.

The 340 wby is so close to the three you mentioned you would never know the difference in a hunting situation. I have several of all those. When you need to rebarrel go to the 338-378 wby like stated. You have the action for it so no need to limit yourself to one of the ones listed and leave all that extra performance on the table. I shot the 340 wby long range during the 70's before I started wildcatting the 338-378 wby. The 340 wby will easily kill elk size game further than you can hit it.

Thanks Guys

I feel even better about my .340WBY now for some LR fun. I'm going to start with AB 225gr for now I have a few hundred & they have good BC. For you that have played with heavy pills above 225gr what has worked best in the .340? I've seen very little info on 300gr.lightbulb

Cheaper brass in the RUM or Edge, but that's about it.

There isn't enough performance gain between any of them to justify switching from one to any of the others.
