I'm looking for peoples experiences with 338 bullets in the 250-300gr class for hunting. The bullets I'm interested in shooting are the accubonds in 250 and 300gr, 285 AMAX, 250 and 300 bergers. This is going to be a specialty pistol so speeds will be less that what longer barrels get, which reduces impact velocity and therefore range that critters can be shot.

What velocities are you expecting? I typically use bullets in the 225-250 range for hunting out of my 18" 338/375 Ruger Striker. The 250gr bullets get about 2700 fps (they can go faster but this is where they shoot best for me) and the 225s are in the 2800 fps range.

If you can match 338 Win Mag rifle ballistics from your gun then the 250 Accubonds would be a great bullet. The 285 and 300gr bullets may not expand reliably at the lower velocities of most SPs since they are less than ideal even at 338 Win mag rifle velocities.

FWIW my go to hunting bullet in the 338 pistol is the 225 TTSX @ 2825fps. For plinking I run the 250 MK @ 2675fps.

I'm thinking 330 dakota right now, so the speeds should be similar to what you're getting. Kinda leaning towards the 250 AB because I've had good results with other AB's. Either that or the 285 AMAX because they are softer bullets.
