Just curious if anyone has put together a 338/408CT rig set up for the 350gr wildcat bullets. Should be a monster.

I have been in contact with Richard at Wildcat Bullets and the 350's arn't avalible just yet, he is waiting for the new Meplat die. I am going to try some in my 338 snipe-tac (338-408 imp)

Kman338,

My 338 Allen Magnum will be using the 350 gr ULD RBBTs. I have a decent supply of the older Wildcat 350s ready for testing.

My 338 AM is basically a 338-408 CT Improved if you will.

I have the barrel, stock, bullets and brass. Just waiting for the **** BAT receiver to get here so I can build the rifle.

The standard 338-408 is supposed to get 3400 fps with a 300 gr SMK with a 140 gr load of H-50BMG in a 35" barrel. I am looking to get 3500 fps with the same weight bullet but more importantly I want 3300 fps with the 350 gr ULD RBBT.

I suspect we will get it with the added capacity of the AM over the standard chambering.

Again, as soon as that receiver gets here there will be a full report posted here.

Good Shooting!!

I dont know if many of you have run the numbers on the expectations of this round, but:
With 3300fps muzzle vel and 350 gr bullet w/.788 BC(?)
At 1000 yds:
2300+ fps
and
4200+ FOOT POUNDS OF ENERGY /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
I had to run it a few times to make sure the thing wasn't lying to me!!
HOLY CRAP THATS A LOT OF ENERGY!!
Me likes lots!!!

With all the tests i have done in my rifle with the 35" bbl,
143grns of HBMG50 3400fps is all i could get and the bolt was hard to open, i loaded some up to 147grns but pulled the bullets. I made a new beefier action to see if there is any difference. The Water Cap in mine is 167grns of H2O.

IchaseCoues,

Well, I do not know exactly what the BC of the 350 gr ULD RBBT is but I can tell you the BC of the 300 gr ULD RBBT is around the .800-.810 range and the 300 gr SMK is in the same class. I would predict the 350 gr ULD RBBT will be pushing the high .800 range, possibly .900. We will have to see with more testing with bullets over actual flight.

Yes, very impressive!!

BD 408,

Just having started playing with the 408 CT case, I would like you know your opinion of the case design. What do you think of its quality, consistancy and strength with top end loads in your 338 Snipe-Tac?

Thanks for your opinion.

I have used three differnet brands of brass so far in my testing of the 408 and the 338 version. The best i have found was the german brand XM, the Jamison i tried had much trouble with case necks being extra thick requiring neck turning on the 408 loads, some neck splitting occured as well on first shots. Not using that anymore. Last brass i have tried was the TTI armory brass, they would not tell me the manufacturer, but it seems to be high quality.
The cases are very tough! Stand high pressure well. Last week i was full sizing a case and forgot to lube it, never the less, it stuck in the die. I tried to pull it back out with the press, and guess what broke? The shell holder! not the case rim. My 338-408 has a 35deg shoulder with about 12deg of case taper. The original action was a Titanium custom, light weight for a carry rifle. I think a larger action would be better for the long bbl i am using. But it did shoot very well with the few loads i tested. The throat was set for the 300gn MK. I was using 200noslerBT for fire forming, they would shoot one hole groups at 100yds, 3900fps, no recoil at all. barrel life, who knows? I tried 250MK's they shot ok, the 300's were the best at 500yd test. 750yds they will pierce 5/8" steel plate, hole about 3/4" dia. I think a great wildcat would be a 375cal on the case, lack of match bullets makes that moot. 416cal for dangerous game or heavy timber elk, more hunting bullet selection. Hoping for the ULD bullets for the 408 soon. I rambled so much i forgot what was your question! Anyway it is fun to shoot!

BD 408,

Anyway I could bother you for a contact for the German XM and TTI brass?

Our two rounds are very similiar in design so it will be interesting to see how they compare performance wise, I suspect similiarly as well.

My rifle design will be a bit different then your, mine will be a heavy rifle. 10"x2" BAT receiver(6 lbs), McMillan 50LBR weighted to 20 lbs, 40" Lilja 1-10 1.750" straight cylinder barrel(24 lbs), my muzzle brake design(3 lbs).

Should have a total rifle weight pushing 60 lbs when all is said and done.

Its funny you mentioned the 375 caliber. There will be a 375 AM coming this summer. Heavy ULD bullets are also coming with possible weights over 400 gr. Will just have to see when those are ready. I agree, with the proper bullet design and weight, I think the 375 would be the king of the long range rounds based on this case. We will see here in a few months anyway!

Thanks for the information,

Kirby Allen(50)

Kirby, I figured it would be mid .8's, but just used a little over what was published on the 300SMK.
With a .9 bc it is very impressive indeed.
