308 Win and Hornady 168gr A Max

Hello everyone,

I have a Remington 700 LTR with 20" barrel and topped with a Swarovski 3-10x42. This rifle shoots factory Federal ammunition with Berger 168 Elite (believe is actually a Classic Hunter) into 1 ragged hole.

I know reload and have not been able to find 168gr Classic Hunters. I have Lapua brass and almost 2000 CCI BR4 primers and about 7 lbs of Varget (use in 3 different 7mm-08's).

Anyway, how does the 168gr A Max compare in terminal performance to the Berger Classic Hunter? Shots will be mainly on whitetail from close to 300 yards.

Hi Steve, it's a very effective deer bullet that kills fast when you put it in the right spot; lungs usually will be turned to smoosh.

Performs like the 7mm 162gr A-Max.

i agree with lvj76 pretty much like hitting them with a 12 lb sledghammer 42 to 44.5 gr varget around 2700fps is a sweet spot in 6 or 7 rifles that i have loaded for

I'm using the 168 amax in my remington 700 308 I'm loading them with 44.5 grain of varget in lupua brass and they have performed very well for me they shoot same POI as the the 152 hammers and the 168 classic hunters at 100 yards

I have never used the 168 on game but I have used the 178 A-Max on Deer and it has been perfect for that so far

Boom, Bruno Shooters Supply has the Berger 168gr Classic Hunter in stock. Also the 180gr Elite Hunter.

168 amax is my favorite deer bullet in 308. Killed a pile of them over the years from 40yds to 400yds. Keep them off heavy bone and they work great. Mine leave my 20" bbl just under 2600fps 44gr varget.
