for the record I am a 30 cal guy but Ihave been impressed with this 7mmWSM.. here's why...

1000 yard data

.284 175 gr smk at 2850fps ( mild load )

vel. / ft. lbs. / apparent trag. / Wind drift
inch MOA inch MOA
1774 1222 -260.7 [ 25.00] -50.0 [ 4.75]

.30 cal 190 gr SMK at 2750 fps

1580 1054 -298.7 [ 28.50] -61.6 [ 6.00]

I found this very interesting. Obviously this is just preliminary work and on paper but I know the 190 SMK stuff is right cause that was from my books on my 30WSM

I always was a 30 cal. and bigger man. Bought a 7mm saum last fall. I'm really impressed with it too. The ballistics of the 7mm projectiles are impressive.

Did you ever try the 175 gr SMK or 178 gr AMAX in the 300 WSM? I have had the best luck with those two in my 300 SAUM. I can't decide on which caliber short mag to get next. I like the idea of the WSM, but I like Remington rifles. Now my dreams have been answered by Remington, and I have to pick either the 270 or 7 mm.

I have a GAP 7mm wsm that Chris Matthews built and it shoots 175 SMKs incredible. The gun shoots 2 inch groups at 700 yards and I am glad that I built it over the 300 WSM. That is my opinion and experience.

my 300WSM that Chris built would do that as well.. but the 7 does it flatter...
sewhat.. my personal feeling is that the RSAUM will be phased out.. the WSM are just to popular.. if ya want a sort and fat one on a Rem action, buy the action and send it to Chris...

You may be right, but from what I've seen neither 7 shorty is as popular as the 270 or 300 wsm.

If you like the 7mm 175gr MK, try the 162gr Amax and I bet they put a smile on your face. I have two 7RM launching them now and LR performance is very satisfying. Should work quite well on game too.

Based on my drop table, elevation and wind drift should be better too.

Until you get way up there in bullet weight, the 7mm just walks on the 30cal. When you get to those 30cal heavies, the WSM case is too small. So if you want 'small case' LR performance, the 6.5 and 7mm are tops. At least until more 6mm and 25cal bullets come out.

Ric, The other factor is recoil. Several articles by Sundra (who loves 7MM) point out that you must ride out about 20% more recoil in 30 cal to equal the same benefits of the 7mm. A 160 7mm basically equates to a 180 30 cal bullet. Because of the sectional density of the 7mm vs 30 cal bullet, and comparable velocities, give the 7mm an edge. Of course, the bullets must perform correctly. The 7mm can also have a better BC in comparable weights. I'm not sure that the animal knows the difference if hit correctly, but is is hard to get people to look at the concept if they believe that bigger is better!

I do notice a recoil difference even though I had both of the wsm rifles breaked.. the 7 is a quicker sharper thump where the 30 was a longer heavier thump...

my 300 was a sub .5 moa to 1200 yards I hope this one will be too or I will kick my own *** for giving up the 300.

I do notice the 162 amax is a very accurate bullet the BC is around .625 or so.. so far.. I need to stretch he out a bit though.

I have 500 more 175 SMK on the way and this bullet is rated at .608 but I suspect that .620 ish might be more realistic

I just ownder how barrel life will compare...

Ric, I've read alot of acticles on the 7WSM, and unfortunately accuracy has not been outstanding. Hope you have more luck. Barrel life will probably be on par with the 300WSM, depending on your powder, pressure, etc. Good luck. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

kinda like the difference between a 7 and 300RUM.i'm building a 7 because the killing power beyond a half mile is definitly in the 7's favor.with these 200 gr pills it looks to be quite a hammer.

That is making your 7WSM look very impressive to me. Same bullet wieght, 100 fps slower at muzzle and 175 fps faster at 1000! What a difference 0.1 makes in bc. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif
