300RUM fustration help

seem to be getting nowhere with my stock standard Sendero in 300rum. We have a limited amount of local powders to choose from which makes the frustration even more. First loads with the rifle produced 0.5MOA straight out of the box with 200gr SMK's and a local powder that has a burning rate equivalent to H870, (CCI mag primers). Varying burn rates with the local powder (specifically the H870 equivalent) from tin to tin has made an almost impossible task of trying to duplicate that load. We have more consistent powders that are equivalent to H4831 and IMR 4350 but I'm not convinced that they're slow enough for such a big magnum.

Any help would be appreciated with the following. preferred bullet is 220gr, or 200gr smk.
- which primer CCI bench or CCI magnum ?
- should I perservere with local powder equivalent to H870 or has anybody had fair results with H4831 (next slowest burning powder equivalent that we have locally)
- Should I try using a lighter bullet (180gr) ?

Paul, Try some 180's with the slowest powder you can find.I use Retumbo in mine.98gr. of Retumbo behind 180gr. a Scirrocco with fed Mag Match Primers.

H-4831 should do pretty well with 180`s and I would think might even shoot the 200 but velocity would suffer.H-4831 is very close to RL-22 and it shoots great with the 165-180 gr bullets.

Definately the mag primers, I'm a huge TSX fan I don't see what you're gonna hit the 180g can't do just as good or better a job on than the 220-240's /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Good info, I shoot a 100gr of retumbo with a 180 gr. bullet and it's very accurate.

I have two 300 RUM, they both do real good with Retumbo
powder and your choice of 180,190,200,210 grains bullets.
Both my rifles like the 200 Accubond with the bullets sitted
just to fit in the magazine. And they both shoot the 210 Berger to about .020" into the lands. in 2006 we harvested an antelope at about 200 yards with the 210 Berger, a mule deer at about 380 yards with 210 Berger, and an Elk at 470 Yrds with 200 Gr. Accubond.

I use FEDERAL GOLD MEDAL MATCH GM 215 MAGNUM

96.3g Retumbo w/ 180 Accubond--3300fps
109g H869 w/ 200 Accubond--3200fps--this is the load I'm using now at .010 off the lands. My OAL is quite long as I stuck in a Wyatts 4" magazine.

Lot-to-lot variations can be a PITA. What I would do in your case is buy several pounds of that local powder. If it is giving you 1/2 moa and good velocities, it would be the one to use. Just mix it all together in one big homogenous lot. That will keep you shooting the same load for a while.

I load 89 grains of R-22 with 180 accubond through a remington sps 300 ultra and get great results
3340 fps-give or take 20 fps
