300rum/300wm/30-338

I'm having a long range gun built in .30cal. What are your opinions of these calibers? Which do you prefer for a gun up to 1000yds?

All three will make 1000 yards. I have a 300 RUM Improved and a 30-338 Lapua. If you don't mind turning necks I'd go with the 30-338 Lapau AKA 30 Wolf. 1000 yards is a walk in the park for it!

If you don't plan on shooting past 1000 yards the 300 WM will do fine, with less powder and less recoil.

There would not be much difference between the 300 WM and 30-338 WM. The 30-338 just burns about 7% less powder with the same velocities. The RUM is a whole other class. A comparison between a 190/200 SMK at 2950 and a 240 SMK at 3000 (or more) is not a fair comparison.

If you are just wanting to punch paper, go with the 30-338 and enjoy your barrel longer. If you want to go LRH out to 1k and beyond, go with the RUM with 200 NABs up to 240 SMKs.

180's are the heaviest I would need. I'd like to pick the most inherintly accurate round possible. But I like the flatter shooting rum.

Why are 180s the heaviest you would need? If you are wanting to shoot to 1k, a heavier more streamlined i.e. higher bc bullet would be better. If you are just wanting to shoot 180s and under, take a look at a 300 WSM or SAUM. Either round will get you to 2950 with 180s without too much fuss. That would save you up to 10-15 grs of powder per boom.

If you are stuck on those three cases, the 300WM would be the best compromise. Top-notch brass from Lapua or Nosler with no fire-forming needed, and it is not a powder hog like the RUM.
