300 Win Mag vs 300 PRC

Had a lot of fun comparing these two great cartridges, one old, one new. They both do about the same thing, but with rather different cases and some other differences as well.

Got scorching velocity with the 180 grain Berger and the 300 Win Mag with Magpro powder. This was in 30 degree weather from a 26" Bergara barrel.

At over 80 grains of powder per cartridge, I went through rather a lot of Magpro coming up with this info. Fun though, I hadn't done much 300 magnum shooting in quite a while.

Only true difference is 3.34" COL to 3.6" COL.
You can do this, as I have done for 30 years, with ANY 3.6"/3.7" action with the 300WM, nothing new there.
Been using the A191 reamer for a decade or more, has the correct throat length for 215's to 230's……done!

I like are the key words, I like my 300WM a lot, its solid using 210 grain SMKHPBTs and just plain fun to shoot it was my first 1762yd gun out at Fouled Bore in OK.

This! I have 3 .300 WMs; 1 could accommodate nearly 3.7" COAL, and the other two around 3.5 - 3.6" COAL.

Thanks for this. I've always wanted a 300. Don't need it but still want it. Don't know why. I just do. The fact that I lean toward the older, tried and true means I wouldn't even give the PRC a glance. Brass would be no problem to find for the WM. The only other contender, for me anyway, is the 300 WSM as it appears to be very efficient and accurate. But then I'm not crazy about short action cartridges and I'm not sure the longer, heavier bullets would work well in the WSM unless I built it with a longer action.

I watched the video on UR. Always fun stuff. You two make watching the videos fun because both of you still act like kids in a candy store. A lot of shooting/reloading videos I don't make it through them just because they are boring and poorly made.

If I wasn't so heavily invested in 300winmag, I probably would have gone PRC with my last barrel. But, I've had a winmag since I was 14, so I'm covered up in components and equipment.

Current tube is a heavy palma 1:9 Bartlein 5r at 26"
It was chambered saami (found that out after the fact) and throated for a 215 hybrid. Shoots good so I can't complain. Next time around, I'll probably go with the A191 or the Broz reamer. Not sure yet. I'm a little over 500 rounds on this one in two years time.

I've run magpro, H1k, and N570. Accuracy wise you couldn't tell the difference in any of them. N570 is awesome stuff bit it's smoking hot. I was running the 215's at a comfortable 2930. Magpro runs them just over 2900 and H1k was right there with it.

Just traded some primers for a jug of N165. Hopefully it works out well.

I have loaded belted cases in 5+ decades and have never had case separation.

Peterson brass:
300PRC is $92.00 per 50 pieces.
300WM is $72.00 per 50 pieces.

Same prices for the 7mm's
It doesn't make sense jumping on the PRC bandwagon for any of them.
Better performance from win mag or the rem mag over any prc, and brass is cheaper.

Was your loading done with virgin or FF cases. I had phenomenal velocities with N570 and virgin cases in my 300 WM with 215 Bergers. No pressure signs. Loaded what I thought was "the load" with fireformed and they were not having it. Had to drop quite a bit for the "real load". This was my first experience with needing to adjust for fireformed cases.
