Hey everyone!

I'm in the market for a new scope for my 300 Roy. I'm looking to go up in quality a bit over my other scopes such as vortex vipers and Leupold vx2s.

I'm an 18 year old college student so I don't have unlimited funds but I really want this to be my go to big game rifle, with hopes of taking it out west on a mule deer or elk hunt in the future.

I would like to spend less that $800 so there are some good deals going on for Leupold mk 4 4.5-14x40 mildot for $629, there's also a Leica ER5 3-15x56 for around $650, or would a vortex viper hst or something of this nature be better? Maybe a Zeiss HD5?

I would consider a nightforce shv if it would be worth it, but I'm not a huge fan of the IHR reticle.

I really would like some sort of ballistic compensating reticle. That's what is holding me back on the Leupold and Nightforce because I'm not sure mil dot is the best for hunting. And the nightforce IHR reticle is the only one in my price range.

I shoot often out to 500 and would like to start to stretch the range a bit more, though not in hunting situations hopefully. If the situation did arise I would like the capability to take 600 yard shots on game.

Thanks everyone!

If you can find a leupold vx5hd 3-15x44 under $800 you mite whant to git it. I like mine a lot, got it from the big supply shop for $800. The model I got retells for a $1000. I have the impact 29moa reticle in it, which gives you 29 moa of bullet drop in the scope.

Going to chime in want to see everyone's option. My 2 cents always buy the best you can afford. It makes your rifle the best it can be. You can always take it with you to the next rifle. Good glass will still be good glass ten years from now. That is my opinion for what it's worth.

Inside my Bushnell 6500 4 1/2-30X50 is a 4 1/2-14X. They are crystal clear throughout their magnification range. I have a mill dot, a 600DOA, and a plex style. The 600 DOA would fit you bill very well. The reticle always moves the amount I want the first time when sighting in. I don't twist any of these. In side by side comparisons the 6500 has better glass than any except the shv. I have not seen one yet.

Thanks for the help so far guys! I found the vx5 for 800. Also forgot about the bushnells, but a 4.5-30 would be some huge magnification range, that is very tempting especially for $800.

DPMJ, I am learning this as well. I will definitely considering saving a little more if it's worth it. I look forward to hearing what you recommend.

Thanks again guys!

Would also consider the Burris XTR-II 3-15x. I've never tried a FFP optic but would be open to it. Thoughts on this?

aOWENc iam a leupold guy. Not that there aren't better scopes out there. I think I inherited it from my dad. Lol. In my honest opinion you are the one that has to use it. People will debate all day long what is best. As long as you have confidence in your setup you have got the biggest part of the battle won. Read all the answers you get on here there is some very good advise to be had and some very nice people with a lot of knowledge. Good luck buddy let me know what you decide

I too love Leupolds but haven't tried the higher end scopes in their line. What scopes do you normally put on your big game or long range setups out of the Leupold line up? Have you tried the mk4 or vx3i? Thanks!

In the tier your looking for glass quality is all plenty good enough, let's face it most of us grew up hunting with whatever Dad gave us and did just fine. I'd choose based on what matters most to you. I've used and compared tons of scopes, I'll give my opinion hopefully it helps. Don't bash me here just my opinions and observations from what I've personally tried. Listed by usage category my recommendations in that price range would be-
Low light capability- Leica ER5, vx5hd
Moa reticles for holdovers- accupower, nightforce shv moar, hd5 rapid z
Open Turret/z stop/lock system- vx5hd, hd5

The conquest v4 can be had in your range, it looks like a nice scope. If a 1" tube and 17minutes elevation is enough the hd5 is a great option especially while they're on clearance. The sig 3-15 whiskey 5 gets great reviews too. The Vx3i is fine but lacks the long range features your after.

I hope that helps atleast a little. Good luck!

That's helps a ton! I was actually just looking at the sig sauer, it seems like a great scope. When you say accupower are you referring to the 4-16 trijicon? I was really giving that a good look. I have trijicon red dots on a few rifles and absolutely love them, I think they are of the highest quality. Do you have any experience with the trijicon accupower?

Thanks for the help!!

I have one here I'm about to mount on a lr muzzle loader I'm messing with. Awesome reticle, nice capped turrets and glass isn't bad. Not the low light alpha but it's good enough, around Vx3i quality near dark. A friend of mine who likes high end stuff swears the whiskey5 is the cats ***, I've messed with them and they feel quality with nice glass but I haven't personally owned one yet to give any more info.

I just put a Leupold VX3i 4.5-14x40 CDS 30mm tube on my new model 70 in .300 win mag, I've only put 20 rounds through this rifle but I like the scope so far. Will be interesting to see how the CDS works once I sort out a load, might be some guys on here have played with one?? $900 here in Australia.
