300 RUM or 338 RUM?? Which and why???

338 ultra,drills a bigger hole ,delivers a bigger payload at long range. I have owned several of both and the 338 ultra just plain wins for me.

Depending on your intentions both are great but in the longer ranges the 338 will carry a little more energy load and is less overbore adding to barrel life. they will both do you well and provide plenty of energy for most of everything thing in N.A. up to 1000 yds .But if you intend to carry things out any further I would go with 338, a lil extra energy is never a bad thing. There is also an option to neck up 300 RUM brass to 338/300 or 338 Edge. this will provide and extra 50-100 fps than the 338 RUM making it equal or in some instances a little faster than the 338 Lapua. For some reason Remington made modifications to the 338 rum case making it in short unable to hold as much powder as the 300 Rum from what ive heard.
It will be an all around long range hunting rig able to take anything from mule deer to bears, big and small. I don't see myself taking any game at 1000 yards but might shoot some rocks or paper at that distance or further. I don't want it any heavier than 11 lbs with scope. I still need to be able to take it into the field. Thanks guys

They set the shoulder back to provide more space for the long .338 bullets without them getting into the lands.

I have a 300 RUM, and want a 338. I believe for your uses, the 300 would be just fine. The 338 brings with it, a lot of extra recoil.

It has always been my belief that the 300 Rum case was designed slightly longer so that it could not inadvertantly be put into a 338 RUM chamber.
Either will fit the bill just fine. You can run the 225 gr Accubond out of the 338 RUM at around 3100 fps and the 250 gr Accubond at 3000 fps. They have published BC's of .550 and .575 respectively. With the 300 RUM you can run the 180 gr Accubond with a BC of around .500 at 3300+ fps and the 200 gr Accubond with a BC of .588 at 3100-3200 fps. If you run the trajectory and energy numbers you won't see a huge difference out to 1000 yards.
I've killed elk with both rounds and they couldn't tell the difference! I have found both rounds capable of sterling accuracy. The nod does go to the 338 RUM for barrel life but either way that is still a lot of shooting before you have to worry about a rebarrel.

I shoot a 300 rum, 210 vld bergers .631 b.c. @ 3125 26" bbl sendero, 20.5 moa to 1000yd using 200 yd zero, shot whitetail doe at 1007 yds with the 210 vld, broke both front legs just below the shoulder also got part of one lung and aorta left a 4-5" exit wound she ran about 60 yds on her hind legs plowing the hayfield leaving a 3 ft wide blood trail.
Shot another doe @120 yds with 210 vld to check for possible bullet blow up after so much expansion at 1000 yds, hit back edge of onside shoulder quartering away shot and i just about decapitated the deer 8-10" exit wound through base of neck severing the spine .
In last 4 yrs i have shot 4 other deer from 450 to 650 with 150 gr accubonds and all have gone down quickley.
My friend has a 338 edge and has had spotty expansion with the 300 smk on whitetails with some deer lost, i would highly recommend the 300 ultra

The 300 RUM came out in 1999, the 338 came out in 2001. The 7mm, 300 and 375 RUM cases are identicle. So what is to stop you from putting a 7mm in the 300, or the 300 in the 375 ?

That's what I have heard too, but what happens whne you try to put a 338 Rum into a 375 RUM?
