I am having a 300. Norma built and was curious if anybody has used that with the 230grain. Berger hybrids. looking for powder type and weight the info has been a bit scarce

I have had good results using Retumbo, Fed 215M primers with the 230 Bergers. I suggest starting low around 84.0grs. & work up to your desired results. I finished up an 8 lbs. of Vit 24N41 only to find out that they no longer make it. Over the next few weeks I plan on trying some US 869 just because.

Nice thanks for the info. I tried the 869 in a 338 ultra but could not get the velocity out of it I was looking for . what kind of velocity were you getting out of the 230 and what barrel length are you running.

I have not run the 230's over the chrono yet. The load that I tested the 230's against were the 208 AMAX's which ran 3157 fps avg. The barrel is 30.5" Rock Creek. The 208's were hitting the in the 13" blue scoring rings of a 1000 yard IBS target. Without changing anything I fired the 230's using the same aiming point. The 230's were 2 MOA higher on the target. I generally use the bullet strike as a barometer for both velocity or BC improvement.

Any update here?

We've got a reamer just waiting for a bolt to put one together with a Rock tube to play with... Got some Retumbo and H1000 to play with. Would like to try out the 230 and 215 Bergers.

Of the two powders you listed I think that you will have better results with Retumbo. I am a fan of slow burners. I have also had better results with RL50.

Mike i had mine built using a 27 inch krieger 5R 1-10 twist, i only shot the 230 hybrids through it. I ended up using H1000. because i had lower es and sd`s with it. Vrlocity was 2970 sd was 7. It shot very well but i sold it to buy my DTA srs in 338 lapua and 260 rem. I will be getting a. 300 norma barrel for it in the near future via benchmark. The 300 norma is extremely accurate and efficient i think you will like it

Excellent glad to hear it!
What powder charges were you running? I'd really like to hit 3100-3150 with the 215 hybrids. Barrel will be a 26" Rock.

Any foreseeable problems of trying to run it out of a factory hinged floorplate?

Mike

I would start around 85 grains. I have no idea how it will feed out of a system like that, i ran mine through AI magazines. I would think if your feed rails on the action are opened to accomodate a lapua sized case you shouldnt have any problems with feeding??? Like i said i ran mine at 2970 with a 230 hybrid without loosening the primer pockets.

Thanks for the reply. This will be our first 300 Norma and if it works out like we hope it will, we should be building some pretty nice lightweight hunting rifles out of them... can't wait to start playing around with them a bit! :)

It should work well in the bdl style magazine considering the relatively short 2.5" case length. You may want to add the 338 norma to the lineup as well???

Just put together the new 300 Norma yesterday. Nothing too fancy, 27" Rock Creek Cut barrel 1:10" twist, Seekins muzzle brake, PTG Fluted bolt, Rem 700 action with action face and action lugs trued, B&C Medalist stock and factory new BDL bottom metal. This rifle got bumped up in the "to-built" line and while I have it in hand nearly complete, I got to wait on brass and dies (just got to bed it and open up a pinch point on the barrel channel). Can't find the brass in stock anywhere (Midway has 338 Norma in stock) so if anybody has a lead I'd appreciate it. :)
