Well fellas , the 338 rum barrel is on its way for the rem 700, now I am looking a heavey bullet that I can get accuracy and still utilize my magazine . I would like to shoot a 300 gr. berger but I have my douts that this can work .. I will be using this gun for long range elk hunting and target shooting.
Any suggestions on a bullet that I can start with that will fit is appreciated.

You can gain some magazine length by putting in a wyatt's mag box. You could also just seat the 300 gr hybrid to fit and feed from existing mag box. I loaded some 230 gr hybrids in my friend's 300 WSM that had them so deep it looks like they are sitting on the primer! They shot just fine. You won't know till you try it. Remember hybrids are not seating depth sensitive like the VLDs. You don't have seat them into or close to the rifling to work. That 300 WSM's seating depth is approx .150" from rifling.

Thanks for the info I have been handloading a couple of years now but i has just recently started loading for precision and this is the first caliber that has been so legnth sensitive i n reguards to magazine/OAL . i appreciate your insite.

If my memory serves my mag is 3.685 id ,has any body used the wyatts mag's, I see they offer a 3.8 legnth with minmal fitting and am a model that will go out to 3.95 or so with ejection port and bolt stop work as well .

The wyatts stuff works just like factory, as long as its done proper. Any good smith will make it work and it is not a lot of cutting. I have had a few and some friends have used them on 338 and 300 ultras.

berger also makes a 250gr and i have used the 250 gr smk with good results .what does everyone think of the short neck on 338 edge and does it cause problems?

Not that I have seen. My edge killed a whitetail at 930 yards and I have shot rocks to 1740 yards. It is very accurate with both the bergers and smk's.

I am using the 300 gr berger, seated to magazine length out of my 338 rum and it shoots lights out. I tried to seat it deeper, but my redding seating die is bottomed out and I get get it seated any deeper to see if it would change at all. I would like to be be able to seat it .020 deeper, but I have to figure out how first. Sounds like a topic for a new thread.

If it shoot lights out why go beeper ? Just woundering

I hunt where there are grizzlies, having a bullet hang up in the magazine because it is too close doesn't give me the warm fuzzies if I have to take multiple defensive shots without warning.
