loaded 45 gr varget in 308 win, shot 150# deer with this bullet, deer was slightly angling away, bullet went to pieces, off shoulder was partially bloodshot. I decided on the 165 out of 308 win to get complete penetration on a shot like this@ 308 win velocities
was this an oddity?

might try sierra 165 either soft bt or hpbt or maybe accubonds. accuracy was great but i don't like a bullet that will blow up at 308 win velocities.

yes the deer died quickly, but what would have happened if the bullet hit the on shoulder bone and blew up there?

i wouldn't think a 308 could do that with a 165, but stranger things have happened. my brother just switched to a 130gr barnes triple shock with his 308. good bit more speed, great accuracy, and the TTSX bullet is a great hunting bullet.

davewilson, if you don't mind, what is your brother loading behind the 130 and what accuracy is he getting
thanks
george
I am going to go to reloading also and make that request

all i remember him saying was he put something together and it shot good enough that he was doing any more load developement. i think he said around 2900. he's shooting a 760 pump with an 18" barrel. i'll call him tonight.

As a statisical sample of one, I shot a deer at 285yds last year with the 165 btip over 46 grains of Varget from a 26" gun. The bullet went in the near side right behind the shoulder and the bullet exited through the offside shoulder, breaking it in the process. The deer dropped and never got back up.
I am hoping to test the 168 btips this year, but have not seen anything worth shooting so far.

If you want to assure that you don't see bullet fragmentation like this again just switch to the Accubond. Many shooters prefer the B-Tip's BECAUSE they frequently become unglued after impact and make an excellent bullet for lung shots. However, if you're willing to settle for a little less dramatic expansion you will get much better penetration if you shoot Accubonds.
bench.

I'd go with the 150 grain TSX and never look back. You'll be hard pressed to recover one. As Dave Wilson said' TSX are great hunting bullets" I totally agree
