I have a 338 Lapua Imp. Do you guys with the bigger rifles ever see the need for more than the standard two rings. I was talking to a bullet manufacturer the other day and he was telling me that he runs two sets of rings on his. Scope is a ATACR 7-35F1. I have the 6 screw Nightforce rings now

Kirby Allen likes using them.

Interesting. My first guess what the he was worried about a sharper, higher velocity recoil impulse on his big 30 cal. - because while something like a CheyTac will have a higher total recoil energy the velocity of it isn't always faster, and can even be slower than a smaller overbore magnum.

Then I read Kirby Allen's own comment on this article:

There is a reason for the four rings, one set is positioned to control recoil energy, the other set is positioned to control the extreme deceleration forces generated by the painkiller muzzle brake. If you do not use this set up, the rings WILL eventually start slipping between the rail slots. Recoil by the way is about the same as a 243 Win because of my Painkiller Muzzle Brake.

I personally prefer one piece mounts in general over rings, I doubt a scope would slip in a Spuhr mount. But until I read this I'd never really considered the brake causing the mounts to slip on the base.

I run the 4 screw nightforce rings with a NXS 8-32x56 scope . I haven't had a problem with things moving . I shoot a 17 pound 338 lapua , 300 gr bergers at 2939 FPS , with a muzzle brakes and more 4 port beast . my rifle is in a McMillan stock . it seems the chassis rifles are harder to keep things tight . I've often thought I'm on the edge , and should add a ring or two .

It is interesting. My action has an integral lug so no worries with that moving. I just mounted the scope with 6 screw Nightforce rings. Guess we'll see. I'm not opposed to adding a ring to it and maybe I should just go ahead and order another set. I don't know

I guess I don't shoot enough of the big boys to worry.
Interesting about the 300 Raptor....

I run a Spuhr mount or 2 set of rings on my big rifles. My 338AX had two of the 6 screw NF rings. When I went through school most of the guys ran 3 rings minimum but back then it was Leupold Mark 4 scope and rings. That was back when I was cool:(

I have 7 # 338 NM,braked.Interesting what he said.I usually slid both in slot of pic back for recoil,maybe should have one each way.Had no problems.My smith told me my mark 4 would last a short time,ten years old now,going on a 6.5 prc I have.On my 9# 338 nm have a spuhr,that rifle had a SS,which worked just fine,then mark4,now M5.Rings where mark 4,then NFUL,w/March

So, if you had my setup that I described above would you add a third ring? If so, do you add it to the front or back? Thanks!

I'm not sure you need it , but it sure won't hurt anything . I don't think it matters where the third ring is placed , wherever you have the room on the scope tube should be fine .

the integral rail is a plus . you don't have to worry about the added weight of extra rings . the rail screws have to hold everything on actions with a separate rail .

(.338 Lapua) This is another option. Badger Ordnance, M40a1, steel matched set.
