284 Win velocities

I have a .284 with the Norma Match chamber designed for 175+ grain bullets. I have a 26" barrel and my load runs a 175 Berger at 2840fps. I have gotten it up to 2900+ with RL26 but my accuracy node is at 2840 with RL23. I would bet you could get the same speed I'm getting with a touch more powder with your 24" barrel. The 162-168s should run 2900+ comfortably with the long throat.

KU--for the most part, unless one chooses to "Push" the round you'll be in the 2700 range for the 175and 2800 for the 160's. Course one can make them do what they want if they wish......

Brockel from here recently built a 284 on a T3 you might wish to reach out to him. He's sent me a bunch of load data as I've looked at doing the same thing but I can't recall where he was at.

With a short SAAMI freebore you'll be in the 2700 range with 175s. With an extended freebore like I have, 2800-2850 is a breeze with the right powders.

Looking at building a 284 win on a tikka action. Mainly looking to set it up for 168 vld, 162 or 175 ELDX. Looking for some experience on what could be expected velocities with a 24"ish barrel.
The .284 is, a great choice and the Tikka action is, "perfect", 168 Berger HVLD's, should get you out to, 800-900 Yards for, some serious, Elk "Medicine" as should still be going, 2,000 FPS with THIS, Bullet at, 850 - 900 yards, needed, to expand.
The .284 should be about, 50 - 100 FPS faster than, a 7mm-08 in, real world, Velocities !
Watch your barrel weight if, walking very far, ie "Hunting" ! A 24" Brux 1-9 with, a .625 / .630 Muzzle Dia., is perfect and with, the "Right", Scope & Stock , you should end up with a 7.5 pound, HUNTING, Rifle ! My son is getting, 2,750 FPS with StaBall 65, in his 7-08, a 22.4" bbl'd Tikka with, the 168's. Depending on, your choice of, Powders,.. 2,850+ FPS is doable, IMO
IF, you don't have, a Gunsmith you might check out, Bryant Customs in Texas ! Mike HAS, reasonable prices and builds, Benchrest Qualiy Rifles without, a Long, wait time. Good Luck !

All, appreciate the info! Ideally, I'd like to launch 168 HVLD at >2,800fps without having hotrod it. I've seen lots of posted data on accurate shooter posting good velocities with 180vlds but LOOONNNG barrels of 28"+. Pressure tested data is pretty sparse (even on Hodgdons) and without quickload wanted to get an idea of what other folks have seen. I have a bunch of h4350, H4831sc, and RL26 that I planned to try. Would prefer to use the H4350/H4831sc but will definitely try Rl26

My current plan is a tikka action with 24" tube copying the tikka factory contour but finishing .65 vs .625 at the muzzle, 8.5 twist. Topping it with a ~20oz scope for a target weight of 8lbs. Until Alterra starts taking orders again, I'll run the factory stock with a vertical grip.

Hoping to use it as my longer range Mtn gun for here in CO, but more specifically for some sheep/goat/caribou hunts I have planned the next few years.

As for throating, definitely realize I need a longer than SAMMI throat but have not done the research to know what my be best for my intended purpose. So any recommendations would be appreciated as well.

My Tikka T-3 SS, .270 WSM Barrel, Mic's .615 dia at, the muzzle and with, Steel, Zee Rings, on an alum Pic rail and an 4.5 X14 scope at, 18 ounces,.. weigh's 7 lbs, 10 ounces, so be careful with that, .650 muz dia trying to make, 8 lbs !
My son's, Tikka, 7mm-08 shoots, the 168 gr. Berg HVLD's at, 2,770 FPS into, 3/8 " to 1/2" 5 shot, groups ( 1-9.5 factory twist, IIRC ).
Pick a Bullet and call Ken at, Brux for BEST, twist. Brux currently holds, the 600 Yard accuracy Record at under, .700 " and reasonably, priced.
I went to, a 24" .707 Dia barrel for, my 6XC build and the gun weighted, 9.5 pounds,.. LOL ! Thankfully, I don't have to Drag it very far for Varmints or, up a Mountain ! Good Luck and have,.. Fun !
