Im thinking hard about rebarreling my trusty 30-06 to a 280 rem so i can take advantage of better bc bullets.i wd mainly be shooting 168 vld's with rl17.i was considering a shorter carbine length barrel for the build, say 22" 9 twist.can i expect 2900 fps?

It's hard to say, barrel length affects velocity but not to a standard. For instance i have a 300 Weatherby 24" that shoots faster than my buddies 26" with the same charge weight. I have a 24" Savage 110 7mm Rem Mag that I got cheap with some frosting in the bore near the muzzle and a ding in the crown. I cut one inch off the barrel and recrowned it, it lost 15 fps...

I had a 7mm-08 that wd make 2970 with a 150 bt and a close to max load of rl17 out of a 22" barrel,so i figured the extra capacity of the 280 wd help with the 168 berger

160gr partition at 2825fps from my 22" Remington Mountian rifle with Reloader 19.
Magpro is suppose to be good for velocity with 160gr+, I haven't tried it yet but it's on my list of things to do. 280AI might be a better option for the shorter barrel and max velocity.

I personally would stay with the 30-06 and load the 200 grain ELD-X bullet with some Reloader 17. Try for 2650fps+ and it will hammer what ever the 280 was going to be used for. The 30-06 AI would be a cool set up with the 200 grain Hornady in 24 or 26" barrel...

its mainly for long range yotes,and a backup gun for steel plates.my current 30-06 pushes 155 tmk's at 3030 fps,but they have a .519 bc,and a 168 berger is .600

Yea the 200 is a little slower, but it's around .620ish BC and makes up its velocity with less drift. I can see where time of flight might be a consideration with coyotes though...

The answer to your question--NO--Don't expect 2900 fps with that set up. With a standard 280 Rem and a 22" barrel at the elevation you are at I would expect some pressure problems. I completely shot out a 280 Rem 22" barrel on a 700 action and after all those rounds and different loads/bullets that that barrel saw I would think you'd be beyond safe territory. Now my experience was before the days of RL17.

I rebarreled that 280 and it is now a 280AI with a 25" tube and 2900 fps is no problem with the 168 VLD's. I run it at 2840 because that's where the accuracy is. My son has the same setup as mine and he's just a hair over 3000 fps.

Since your a member you may want to do search and type in 280 with 22" barrel and you may find some older post that may help you.

This yote was taken with .225 NAB (BC = .550) out of my .338 WM at 338 yards. He must not have gotten the memo on time of flight. :):Dgun)

Sorry, I couldn't resist.

On a serious note, if TOF is a big factor and it's primarily for LR yotes, I'd seriously look at .25-06/AI and load them with 75 grainers and push them at 3700 FPS+, but that's just me.

When I go after yotes, I usually have one of these with me. Unless I'm mad, then it's 300 Weatherby..

If it's a yote rig, why not spare the tried and true '06 and build an AR throated for heavier bullets? I have a custom AR that cost about a grand that shoots 77 grainers. I would imagine that would be good medicine for yotes. Hopefully mudrunner will chime in. He's all about the .280.
