280 AI Velocity problems!?

59 grains H4831SC with 145 LRX bullet. Nosler Brass, Fed 215's .030 from lands. 3020 FPS & sub 1/2 MOA
24" barrel Cooper 52
Worked up from there but 59 grains was absolutely the most accurate in this rifle.

If this is a long range hunting rifle speed most surely matters. We always seek the highest accuracy node possible within the pressure range for that powder. Speed extends the expansion threshold and helps cover up for human error at extreme ranges. Accuracy first, best speed & accuracy, ALWAYS. When you're banging steel or paper at KD (known distance) speed is less important, when you're harvesting game at extreme ranges it is as important IMO

We just finished course pressure testing on the 150 ABLR's in VV-N560 & RL26. All I will say here is we exceeded your expectations with a Tier 1 barrel in 280 AI @ 26" with the 150

Feel free to contact directly for details.

Good Luck

I ran RL 17. RL 26 and IMR 4831.
I ran into ejector marks and high deviations with RL 26. 61.5 grains 3013 FPS with 139 LRX.

RL 17 I stopped at 54.5 and 3039 FPS. High deviations but no pressure. 139 LRX. Had planned to change primers and retry.

25" Brux 1-9

IMR 4831 59 gr 139 LRX 3194 FPS clean cold bore. 3154 fouled with deviation of 7fps. Most accurate as well. Once fired brass Quality Cartridge Brass. New Nosler brass brought this velocity down to 3090-3100. After once fired it came back up.

With my 280ai with 160 accubonds in a 24 inch barrel I hit 3020 fps with 59.3 gr of reloader 23. That produced light ejector marks and very slight sticky bolt lift, so I backed off. Didn't get great accuracy. Right around 1 moa. That was at 87 degrees.
Switched to reloader 26. Hit 2920fps with 59.5 gr at 87 degrees. This provided a group of 0.4 inche's at 100 yards. I load at 60.1 grain's to yield 2920 fps at 30 degrees. Haven't done anymore workup, but no pressure signs. Seem's like you should be able to hit 3100 fps with a 140gr and reloader powder.

My SAAMI chambered, 26" barrel 280AI gives me 3235fps MV with a 140gr SGK and a max load (61.0gr) of Alliant's 4000-MR. Boringly accurate.

I prefer the 160-165gr bullets for any distance over 300yds, also 175gr SGK's, with a max charge of MagPro. (3045fps with Horn 162gr ELD-X and 64gr of MagPro)

CAUTION: This post discusses loads or load data that may or may not be appropriate for your gun or for the cartridge(s) and components mentioned. Due to typos, variations in guns and components, and the abilities and judgement of users of this data, the writer does not assume any liability for damage or injury resulting from using this information. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO DUPLICATE THE DESCRIBED LOADS without first working them up from a published safe starting level charge while watching for pressure signs. If you don't know how to do that please don't try, for your own safety and the safety of others.

Hi guys. I use rl23 in my 280ai and im running 180 eld m at 2900 so would have thought 3100 with 140s would have been achievable

How are the newer Reloder (Alliant spells it without an "a", not my typo) powders as far as temp sensitivity? Are 23 and 26 the same technology that they released with RE16? Or are they more like all their older powders (15, 17, 19, 22) that ended up being fairly temp sensitive?

My only experience with Alliant is with Pro200MR in my 308 and RL16 in my 6.5 Creedmoor. They claim RL16 as temperature stable, and I've seen testing that show that it's comparable to H4350 and Varget in that regard. In my rifle gives a good 150fps more than H4350 with the same bullet (143gr ELD-X). No experience with 23 or 26 though... if they are temp stable and give the velocities people are quoting, that'd be pretty nice. I shoot a straight 280Rem and have gotten pretty decent results with H4831SC and H1000 shooting 160gr Accubonds.

I'm going to play Davis advocate here. You all are just talking about speed. Speed doesn't kill accuracy does. You want speed try a 22-243 or a 204. Chase the accuracy not the speed.

H100v is easy to get 2975 within hogdon load data and a 26" barrel. 140s at 100 fps more shouldn't be a problem

Per earlier folks I don't want to be in the low end of a Cali era capability but I have no interest to pushing fps over accuracy

I'm using RL16 with a 155gr projectile and getting right at 3000fps. I was able to get 3100 but the better accuracy node was at 3000fps. RL 16 is very temp stable and works very well in this cartridge.

RL23 is temp stable, i know that from my personal experience. I believe RL26 is not, ive never used it but that is what ive read and been told.

Maybe you should read all the posts before coloring us all just speed freaks. My Post says my max load for the 140gr is "boringly accurate". That holds true for the 162ELD-X load as well; I kill gallon milk jugs at 700yds no problem shooting off my tailgate.
Accuracy trumps velocity to be sure, but you can have both if you work at it.

BTW, I know what a Devil's Advocate is, but who is Davis?
