Is anyone using the 150 SST in a 270wsm?
I have used the 140 Abonds up to now..lethal at close range (up to 200 yards) but after that I find they pencil through - unless you smash bone.
Will look to keep the 140's as a short distance load and possibly the SST's as a long range deer round.
Interested to hear of other's experiences with this projectile in the 270wsm.

130 & 135 grain is best in the .277 caliber

I've shot a good share of deer with the 140 Accubond and thought that even on our large mule deer it was borderline getting them open, I've never had one not open but I did recover a bullet that had blown through a buck high in the lungs that just hit a rib and even after plowing into the dirt it was open but not mushroomed. Elk they open and mushroom on!!
I tried some SST's but could never get the accuracy I needed from them. I did shoot them into some test media and they sure nuff opened but more than I like, kinda the same as a ballistic tip.

The whole shooting 130 vs 140 vs 150 gr really boils down to what your particular rifle will push, there is very little difference inside the most effective range of the 270 WSM. The best bullet so far I've shot is a 165 Matrix at 3053fps, it will blow the doors of the lighter bullets in the long run if you want to push the range on the 270 WSM. You also have the 175 Matrix and 169.5 Wildcats, neither of which I've gotten my grubby hands on so I don't have anything on them but they sound good!

Bigngreen - thanks for that.
What powder's, oal's etc. did you try with the SST's?
I use them exclusively in my .308 for close range shooting on our red and sika deer. Having a great run with them - no need for follow up shots!
This is no doubt due to the moderate speed they are going (2650fps) - eliminating the explosive effect at higher MV's others experience.
There are no projectiles available in the 160+ range for .277 in NZ as yet.

I tried the 130 gr. SST's in my 270 mag, and the bullets blew up passing thru carboard! I was getting close to 3350fps. The 150 grain bullets will do about 3250 fps, and I think the results would be similar unless Hornaday changed the bullet's construction

I like the slower powders in my 270 WSM's in the 140gr + bullet weights with Retumbo being my favorite but I need to test H1000 a little more. I ran the 140 SST's out at 3300-3420 fps trying to find a sweet spot but I had no luck, they stayed in the 1.5 MOA range which wasn't that interesting.
I really wanted them to work as they seem like a good low velocity or long range bullet the alternative is the Ballistic Tip which has similar characteristics but shoot very well and seem much easier to tune up.

Hornaday told me the sweet spot for their 130's was 3000fps and much of anything over 3100 fps wasn't gonna work well. I found the 150 grain Speer Grand Slam worked very well at those kind of velocities (3300fps for me)

That's good info to keep in the back of the mind if I try them in something else, knowing that the 150 would be the one to try in the WSM.
