Ok i will look into those but Ive always wanted a 270wby
Okay I've read that you want a .270 Weatherby, I get it. I always wanted a wildcat cartridge, so I settled on the .270 Ackley Improved. The performance will match or supersede the .270 Weatherby at about 1/2 the cost for ammunition, or for brass if I want to go that way. Unless you purchase a donor rifle that is .270 Winchester there are not too many options for you. The .270 Winchester Short Magnum is a viable choice, there's around 100 feet per second difference between the two cartridges; but.....it's not a .270 Weatherby. You next option would be to purchase a .270 Winchester rifle that you really like, have the bolt opened and the rifle rechambered, and.....probably the feed rails will have to be reworked. This is not going to be a cheap date, and.....in all likelihood you will be working with a factory barrel and probably that barrel length will be from 22-24 inches, and not a 26 inch barrel where the overbore cartridges really shine and maximize performance. For me if I really wanted to have a fancy rifle that
"had" to be in .270 Weatherby I would find a donor rifle with a magnum action (bolt face), find a good gunsmith and have that gunsmith blueprint the action, install a quality barrel (26 inch) reblue the action/barrel, do a trigger job, glass bed and pillar bed the action ($600-800) and purchase a fancy stock of your choosing. My son wants a .300 WinMag, so for Christmas he will be getting a .300 WinMag. We like Ruger 77 tang safety actions, I found a donor rifle in 7mm RemMag on GunBroker for $350, installing a 26 inch (1-10) Lilja barrel, blueprinting the action, rebluing the action, and doing a trigger job. I am doing the stock work myself, glass/pillar bedding and a recoil pad. I'll refinish the stock, my son will not know it but he will be spraying the stock with two to three very light (mist) coats of flat automotive clear when it's done; we like the Ruger stocks. Good luck with what you decide on doing.
