270 win load ?

I am getting some 140gRBTHP Wildcat bullets and am looking for load advice. In the past I have used mostly h-4350 for all my 270 loads (90g - 130g) but am thinking of using h-4831 or h-1000. One promlem when using a slower powder is running out of room in the case. Can I use a mag primer and reduce the powder by a few grains or should I stick to a powder that fits and works with a non mag primer? Will a slower powder help any in a 22" barrel? Any other powders I should try? Thanks

With 140's I use cci 250 and 60-61 grains of R-22. work up to it and it will probably get you the highest velocity without case damage.

Using a tall drop tube I can get @ 62 grains of long rod powder in a standard 270 win case. These are very compressed loads.

I did allot of chrono work and powders slower than 7828 or faster than r-22 could not attain the same high speeds in my rifles with the 140 & 150 SBT's

My .458 Barnes X 405 grain shot into soft sand at 100 yards - .277 cal. 169.5 grain Wild Cat - 150 moly SBT and the end is a 140 Barnes x

I have a 29 inch barreled 270AI that I want to use for load development on these 169.5 grain bullets. So far I've done some testing with loads just over 3000 fps through the chrono placed at 20 feet from the muzzle. This same rifle gets the best patterns with 150 SBT's at @ 3140-3160 fps

How does r-22 do with extreme temp changes? What length of barrel on your 270?

I have a 26 inch 270 win. It was many years ago that first had to pound the bolt open because of blown primers caused by heat. It was a hot couldless day at the range and like a new dummy I didn't even think about these loads sitting open in a 50 round box in the sun.

I learned that keep my rounds in a cooler on hot days and I keep rounds in an inside jacket pocket or shirt pocket on cold hunting days. It keeps heat deviation to a minimum.

To answer your question R-22 seems to be less heat sensitive tham my other main power for that caliber 7828. But I have not taken the time to do heat vs chrono testing

I do use 60 grains of IMR4350 for my 100 grain varmint rounds

I just started loading for a .270 Win. It has a 22" factory sporter barrel on it. The load I settled on was a 140 Accubond and 59gr of H-4831sc(which is over book max). That load chronographs at 2800fps. Not really a screamer in velocity, but man is it accurate! Three shot groups of 3/4 moa or better are the norm. I've usually gotten higher velocities with R-22 in most calibers I use it in (rather then 4831) but accuracy is always good with 4831. This was the first combo I tried and feel like I hit the jackpot right away /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif 2800 fps is fast enough for what I'm doing and I sure can't argue with the accuracy I'm getting.

H-4831 is what I will probably test first with the 140g Wildcat's. H-1000 is probably a tad slow for a 22" barrel. I may be wrong but doesn't seem like anyone else is using it and I don't think I can get a max load in the case. Might be able to if using a mag primer but I won't be the first to try.

Tried H-1000 w/169 gr WC prototypes but 7828 worked better.

Have a 27" bbl so velocities will be a bit higher than w/a 22"er.

For the 90gr I'd recommend 4895 for the 140 I'd recommend one of the RLs; 22 if bbl were longer.

Biggest difference (improvement) in accuracy came when I switched to NON MAGNUM primer. Load is now 58.5 gr RL-22 and CCI 200s. Velocity is just under 3200 accuracy hovers around the 3s. Bullet is 140 Hornady boat tail. Same load w/Nosler 130 ballistic tips give same accuracy and a bunch more velocity.

The best powder for the 270 that I ever had was N205 and N204 for the 90gr Sierra. I've heard that RL-22 is a "cheap" MRP?????

I've been loading the 270 Win since the early 90's. Your advice so far it good. Any of these powders should work fine:
H4350, 4831SC
IMR4350, 4831
Re19, Re22 (and yes, these are made in Sweden and are temp sens.)

I do not read a lot about it anymore but one of my most favorite powders for the 270 for overall accuracy is AA3100, especially with a 140 grain bullet.

I tried magnum primers several times and did not notice a substantial difference in vel. or accuracy.

In my opinion, there are 3 ultimate powders for the 270: H4831SC, IMR 4831, and Re22. If you're looking for top vel. in your bbl, look to Re22.

I am shooting H-1000 in the 300 win and the 270 win with great accuraccy for both I use 63 grain and 140 grain bullets in winchester brass with federal 210 primers for the 270 speed is 3140 out of the Kreiger 29" barrel
