There is something about the classic 270 but to my understanding, Ackley never officially made an improved 270 Win. With current powders and new high BC 270 bullets I decided I needed to see what it could do. I necked down a 280 Ackley brass and seated a 170 Berger in it for a reamer order. Alex Wheeler chambered a #4 Krieger 1:8 barrel onto a the Lone Peak Ti action then bedded it into an AG Composites stock. Decided to go bright with the cerakote to match the stock. I just finished barrel break in but initial load work looks promising. N560 reached 3075 before showing pressure and the accuracy looks good around 2940. I can share more load data as I finish tuning if there is interest

I have a 29 inch 270AI and I have used Retumbo in days past. Then when R-25 came out I testedit. Then r-26, Magpro, ramshot magnum. 169.5 wildcat VLD and later Matrix 175's

WOW , INTERISTING EXPERIMENT!! I shoot a 270 Win in its classic original specs, using H4831SC , which used to be considered a slow powder 45 years ago. It works very well on Deer in my Weatherby Ultralight, with a 130 Grn. Ballistic tips from a 24 inch Thin Krieger barrel , with a 10 twist. for 3050 fps. If However, I think I need more Velocity, and more Energy, to be delivered at Greater Ranges, then I use my 270 Weatherby Mag. I think Roy Weatherby did something just like you are doing, by trying IMPROVE on the ballistics of the .270 Win, back in 1945 by selecting /modifying a case to gain more capacity, to get more velocity and energy, and also increasing barrel length from 24 to 26 inches. Within the limits of his technical data ,at that time, my opinion, he managed to increase the velocity and the energy that a 270 Bullet could be fired. So, it worked. I'm sure it will work for you too!! Your .280 AI case selection is very interesting. Just as reference, I would love to see a Ballistic comparison , using the same 130 Grn. and 150 Grn. bullets , of the .270 Win; the 270 Win Short Mag ; the 6.8 Western , the .270 AI ( Your version ) and the. 270 Weatherby Mag . 100 yard Zero, to 1000 yards. Please keep us informed!!! Love your wild looking rifle!!

If wheeler built it it's going to shoot. Now personally I'm not sure what if any advantage a .277 could have over .284 in the same case but who am I to question lol. Rock on.

Neck down 280 AI brass so 270-280 AI and no fire form needed? Sounds cool.

I can some what relate as I feel there is a better selection of high bc bullets with the 7mm. But here's one possible caveat, ease of making an accurate load. I noticed that the 270 WBY Mag was really easy to work up an accurate load. I'm not sure why it just was. Might have been the neck, maybe the radius on the shoulder, or maybe just .277 bullet. Who knows. But maybe a 270-280 AI will have the same easy in load work up. Besides it's a 270, for some reason I just like 270's lol.

Just look up the case volume of each and it will tell you which is the most inefficient and least number of rounds before barrel replacement in an attempt to gain just a few more FPS.

I'm a lifetime 270 win man and I had one rebarreled in 270 AI before 270 WSM came out. 270win based cases are or should I say were cheap and plentiful. I would tend to say that if you anneal and don't expand the primer pocket I have cases that might be over 10 reloading cycles. But who cares I have a thousand of them. My Weatherby 30-378 was maybe 2-3 reloads and the barrel lasted about 400 rounds.

I also think that 26 and up barrel lengths are just free ballistic HP and the ability to burn the slower cooler powders

@Bullwhacker what is the COAL of the 170 Berger in your cartridge? I have a FN Belgium Mauser that might need a new barrel. Unfortunetely it's magbox is only 3.400" internal dimension :(
