.270-8x68 with 180 grain Woodleigh bullet

I think the 52.5 charge is getting me 2500 fps. 51 grains? 2440...? Just doing math and using hodgdon web data. I think I will settle on the hotter charge, 52.5 , for now. It is noticeable more recoil than 51 grains...but not a lot. 22 inch barrel on a 20 year old Remington 700.

Funny how a grain of two more powder can noticeably affect recoil and blast as one approaches maximum isn't it? I've fired a few seriously overpressure rounds over the year due to errors in judgment when loading (not on purpose, in other words) and when they're really hot I don't even need to inspect cases or feel that the bolt is stiff, more than anything else it just sounds "wrong" when it goes off.

Are you happy with those velocities? I remember I tried 7828 and a few others and most of them maxed out right around the 2500 fps mark you've found as well. Rl 25 beat the others by 100 fps (7828, 7828 ssc, 4831, rl22)

7828 is just all I had. So I will try to stick with it for this hunt season. 100 fps more would be huge! In the killing critter department. I plan to use this 180 load inside 150 yards...maybe 200.?

Should be a good bone breaker load. Do let us know how they perform. I never hunted with mine, used most of them up testing loads, never got the accuracy of 130-150 grain bullets, called it a day. Very interesting to me though.

I like 7828, I too have used it because it's what I had. It's always in stock. I find it very underrated today, especially in the 270. I don't know why so many sources of load data won't try slower burning powders with this cartridge. The case to bore ratio is very similar to the .300 win mag yet many seem to think 4350 is middle of the road, and there's no point going slower than 4831. My experience has been that the 270 shines with lightly compressed charges of anything starting around 4831 at the fast end. Even with 130 grain, a little over 60 grains 7828 compressed in Winchester brass gives an honest 3100 fps out of my 22 inch tube and very consistent. For me rl22 is still the one to beat with conventional weight bullets. One of the better loads I've found got me 3100 with 140s, again out of a 22". I'm seeing reports of the newer 7977 powder getting 150s to 3000.

Thanks for that info.
I may try some nosler partitions in 130 and 150, and 7828. Have them in my pocket in case I have a long shot outside 200 yards and have time to chamber a different round. Or if I hunt more open terrain.

180 woodleigh in 270 Winchester, using 7828ssc. I thought I could start the afternoon at 150 yards...but, my first shot of 51 grains was high, right, and second shot was off paper, cool barrel each time. So, I moved back to 75 yards as before (last day I shot this load).

180s using 52.5 grains 7828 at 100 yards. Not sure where to go with this load. I may max it out to 52.8 and more 52.5 and I like the reduced recoil of the 51 gr loads, but the seem erratic from shot to shot. Part is me. Just gotta try more fine tuning from 52.5 gr maybe.?

I think the erratic bit is the bullet itself. That was about all the accuracy I could get, maybe a bit better than mine even. They're stable but I suspect just barely stable. There's a reason nobody else makes a comparable product, in my conclusion.

Hi Lee , just looked at one reloading sources I have my Barnes #3 uses w-w cases ,fedGold match 210 primers ,24bbl,&their 180grain original round nose bullet &7 powders ,with imr7828 start load is 50.0 gns for 2542 fps and 54.0 (max) for 2745 fps how ever RL-22 beats it 49.0 start for2554 fps & max of 53.0for 2762 these being the two best powders recommend by Barnes , hope this helps Cheers !!!

Well, it ain't easy...and it doesn't seem to be a Long Range Hunter load. But, I will try slightly different loads til I run out of projectiles. Got about 60 left. Want updates.?
