.264 Win Mag: Any downside with starting with a bone-stock Rem Sendero?

Having just discovered the utility of the .264 Win Mag, I can't see the need for me to either:

- spend $2k+ for a Win M70 pre-64
- build a LR custom rig

When I can grab a new Sendero and spend the saved money on getting my handloading gear.

Am I wrong?

Any other input welcome.

As with any factory rifle, it can be luck of the draw whether it shoots or not. That being said, I have never owned a stock factory rig that was as accurate as my Sendero in 25-06 Rem. It was an absolute hammer until the day it died on a Prairie Dog shooting excursion. Either way you choose to go, good luck! The 264 is a fantastic cartridge.

First of all, welcome to LRH. Only you can make this decision. I still like my factory rigs that are still in my safe. The Rem Sendero .264 Win Mag is a fine rifle that should serve you well. Like quigley257 stated, it comes down to luck of the draw. Custom rifles are definitely a rabbit hole, but sometimes you just have to jump in to fill a desire to build exactly what want. That is the beauty of this hobby. You don't have spend $7k on a rig to enjoy shooting and hunting longer ranges.
Now reloading can become a bigger rabbit hole than custom rifles. There always seems to be something that you want to improve your reloading. For example, I want an AMP Annealer and an A&D fx120 scale. Do I really need them? No, but I want them badly.

Howdy, the 264 Win. is my favorite caliber, sendero is a favorite in a factory gun. I would get it, if I were you. And if you don't like it, I will buy it from you. Great platform to work with.

Am kinda ready to start on the reload stuff too.

Two follow-up questions:

1) Does anyone make a two-stage trigger for the 700?

2) My initial desire is load a lighter bullet (120s) to keep velocity and thus target impact on the high side. 140s seem to be the go-to for the .264, so am I a dope for planning both a calm wind and a heavier wind brace of loads?

Barnes TTSX 120 might work for you. Nosler 120gr by. Might look at 130 Accubond.

Just my $0.02; If it was me, I'd shop for a deal on a used rifle and plan to have it blueprinted if it didn't shoot repeatable accuracy. I'd also probably plan on a vertical grip CF stock upgrade and maybe a muzzle brake.

What twist does the barrel have? That may dictate your bullet choices anyway. Sadly if you are shooting factory ammo your choices will be limited as well. If it has a 9 twist barrel 130 class bullets will likely be your limit anyway.

I built a modified 264 Win Mag and it's a screamer, but I had a custom chamber built and throated to shoot 156 grain Berger bullets.

Like most factory ammo, the 264 WM is handicapped by using it.

I would develop one load or use one type of ammo for now…you will get to know that rifle and load, and that would be more beneficial than calm load and wind load. But help yourself by looking for the appropriate bullet with a good BC if wind is a concern.
